In Memorium – Baron Davro son of Davril son of Davin

In this land of hearts we call Calontir, we grieve together when one of us passes from this life, even if we have not seen them in many years. His Excellency Baron Davro son of Davril son of Davin, third Baron of Forgotten Sea, passed away on September 11, AX LIX. Baron Davro was an early member of Forgotten Sea who joined the SCA while the future barony was still a shire. Those who read the Chronicles of Calontir will notice Davro’s name mentioned repeatedly in the tales of our history. His service to the burgeioning Calontir brought him renown. He was awarded arms by the Crown of the Middle Kingdom on September 3, A.S. XIII.
His prowess on the field in those early years came to the notice of Warlord Brummbar II, who recognized him as a Companion to the Order of the Iren-Fyrd in July A.S. XV. He was the nineteenth Fyrdman of that Order. Davro’s service to Forgotten Sea and to Calontir earned him Companionship within the Order of the Torse on October 27, A.S. XIX by King Shadan and Queen Erzebet.
When Baron Morgan of York departed Forgotten Sea, Davro was selected by the Midrealm Crown to serve as the third Baron of Forgotten Sea. Alongside Baroness Elwynn of Fountain Grove,, Davro was steward of the lands as Calontir transitioned from Principality to Kingdom.
Baron Davro was a friendly and welcoming presence as Baron. He will always be remembered for helping newcomers to Forgotten Sea get started on their paths in the SCA. Under his and Elwynn’s stewardship, Forgotten Sea grew through the Barony’s recruitment efforts at the Kansas City Rennaisance Festival. Many who would leave their own marks on Forgotten Sea and Calontir came into our Society during that time. His friends remember his warm smile and sharp wit. Davro and Elwynn resigned from the Baronage on May 21, A.S. XXIII and were honored as Baron and Baroness of the Court by King Thorvald and Queen Branwyn.
Family and commitments outside of the SCA would soon pull Davro away, and he was little seen in Calontir thereafter. However, his legacy continues to this day and Calontir shall always honor his memory.
Baron Davro is survived by his daughters Aeriel and Vanessa. Baroness Elwyn, his former baroness and lifelong friend predeceased him in A.S. LIII. Let the Calontir chorus raise its voice to honor the passing of Baron Davro, and may Calontir always remember with honor and gratitude the contributions he made to our community.

Calontir, the Golden Falcon gathers together to mourn the loss of Baron Hrolf Ulfsson who passed from this life on September 3 of A.S. LIX. Baron Hrolf was a presence in the early days of Calontir and he witnessed Calontir grow from a Principlality of the Middle Kingdom into its own proud Kingdom. He was first awarded arms from the Middle Kingdom during the reign of Prince Brummbar and Princess Valmai on February 26 A.S. XVII. His service to the first Crown of Calontir was well beyond the call of duty and as such, he was greatly honored by King Chepe and Queen Arwyn beginning with Companionship into the Order the Leather Mallet for his skill at leatherwork and for his research. He was called to be their Thegn and was honored with a Court Baronage on September 15, A.S. XIX. Pennsic XIII saw the first Calontir Royal Pavilion, giving the Kingdom a place to gather and revel after the battles. This first Royal Pavilion was the creation of Baron Hrolf. Many songs have been sung in the shade of Calontir Living Room, including some written by Baron Hrolf himself. Such were his contributions to Calontir that Queen Arwynn declared him to be one of the first recipients of the Queen’s Endorsement of Distinction.

Baron Hrolf’s talents were not limited to singing and songwriting. King Throvald and Queen Branwyn awarded Hrolf a Golden Calon Swan for his skill at costuming and cardweaving on June 11, A.S. XXII. For his ongoing service to Calontir, King Voelkmar and Queen Isadorra entered Hrolf onto the roles of the Order of the Torse on October 21, A.S. XXIII.

Baron Hrolf is survived by his wife, Lady Swietoslawa Jolanta Leszxzynska, his daughters Hillary, Alex, and Maureen, and several grandchildren. Let Baron Hrolf be remembered with honor whenever Calontir gathers under the Royal Pavilion and whenever the Falcon Family raises their voices in camraderie and song.

Ealhywynna’s activity had waned and waxed over the years. For the last year, she could often be seen at meetings of the Canton of Aston Tor and Forgotten Sea Fighter Practice. She was always willing to pitch in and help whenever there was need and she always did so with a smile. Her presence will be missed.

The Calontir Populace Badge in honor of Lady Etienette l’Bluet

The hearts in the Heartlands are heavy as news has reached us of the passing of Lady Etienette l’Bluet.

Etienette and her sister, Leofwyna, came to Calontir at Clothier’s Seminar in A.S. XXXI. Both quickly became part of the community in the Barony of Mag Mor and that of Calontir. Etienette served at Exchequer for the Barony for many years and served as Gold Key for Barony for an extended period as well. She kept the Gold Key in good order and made many pieces of loaner garb. Etienette has been honored by many Barons and Baronesses of Mag Mor, holding the Order of the Cridh Mor, Adhoc Or, Ancaire, and Cambroges. She was awarded arms by King Luther and Queen Lenore in December of AS XXXII. Her artistry earned Etienette the Order of the Golden Calon Swan from King Thjothrekr and Queen Yrsa at Lilies War in June A.S. XXXV. Her service brought King Martino and Queen Ariel to invite Etienette into the Order of the Torse in September of A.S. XXXVII.

Among Etienette’s many contributions to Calontir were countless hours spent painting scrolls for awards and greeting our populace and friends as they signed into site at Gate. Etienette will be remembered for her skills in costuming and embroidery. She was apprenticed to His Excellency Master Sashatec Nickali Koliskof. She was part of a winning team who assembled and entered a complete Florentine outfit at a one weekend costuming contest. She loved to sit with her friends and listen while they discussed the topics of the day. May Calontir always remember her generosity of service and talent.

Lady Etienette was merchanting at An Tir Coronation where she fell ill. She passed from this life on July 27, A.S. LIX. Lady Etienne is survived by her sister Lady Leofwyna le May and by her many friends in Calontir.

When the proud Calontir Falcon was but an egg in the nest, Master Juan Macias de Alarcon was there, The Kingdom that Master Juan helped to create grieved when we learned of his passing on May 31 AS LIX. Master Juan was beloved by many and celebrated a long career in the SCA.

Juan was one of the early members of the Shire of Three Rivers who was known for his service and talent with Theatre Arts. Baron Geoffri of Warriene, who helped found Forgotten Sea, remembers Master Juan as one of the “Patron Saints of Forgotten Sea,” telling how Juan and others from Three Rivers would travel accross the state to help Forgotten Sea as it was getting started. Juan was present for Three River’s transition from shire to barony. He witnessed the formation of the Region of Calontir, the Principality of Calontir, and finally the Kingdom of Calontir.

Juan created and directed plays for the entertainment of those who came to events. He welcomed guests into his home when they travelled from far away, and he was selfless in service to the Barony and to Calontir. He served as court herald and held many offices, both in Three Rivers and in Calontir.

Master Juan was first awarded arms by Midrealm King Albert and Queen Selene on September 25 AS XI. He was further honored by the Middle Kingdom with Companionship into the Orders of the Willow for his art and the Dragon’s Heart for his service. Juan served as Thegn to Ternon and Ghleanna, Calontir’s frist Prince and Princess. When the Witan of Calontir, then called the Calon Council, created Calontir’s award structure, they granted Juan the third Calon Lily. Warlord Brumbarr, first in the Falcon line, recognized Juan with admittance into the Orders of the Iren-Fyrd and the Torse.  Prince Humpk (later Duke William) and Princess Mamarra entered Juan into the rolls of the Order of the Cross of Calontir.

Calontir’s first Crown, Chepe and Arwynn elevated Juan into Companionship within the Order of the Laurel for his skill and knowledge of Theatrical Arts and King Aesgirr and Queen Miriam rewarded Juan’s “treason to the Midrealm (his tireless work towards getting Calontir to Kingdom status)” by honoring him with the Order of the Pelican. Calontir historians have relied on Master Juan for remembering our Kingdom’s earliest days and providing insight to our earliest members.

Juan is survived by his brother, who is not in the SCA. May the memory of Master Juan Macias de Alarcon live so long as the Falcon flies over Calontir.

In Memoriam – Lord Jarmarr Mapstone

The breezes of Spring brought sad tidings to the Falcon Tribe. Lord Jarmarr Mapstone departed this life on April 24 AS LVIII .

Jarmarr was a fixture at Broken Harp during the Lilies Wars for many years. Jarmarr’s friends say that they will always remember his smile, his stories, and that he was always ready with a joke to entertain the crowd.

Jarmarr played bodrahn and performed with the Irish Folk band Wylde Nept. His talent will be remembered by all those heard him perform.  Lord Jarmarr was awarded arms by King Donnegal and Queen Aislinn on October 27 AS XXXVI and was entered into the Order of the Golden Calon Swan on November 11 AS LII by King Damien and Queen Isabell.

Calontir is better for having had Jarmarr amongst us. Lord Jarmarr is survived by wife Lady Kriesant aka Verti and many friends at the Broken Heart and the Rogue Camp.

“For I’m at my best when my boots wear thin, I’ll see the world by the mile
Every lake as green as a lady’s eyes, every breeze as welcome as a smile.
From caravans of gold and silk to ships on the new moon’s tide,
I found my comfort is a mossy bed with the road close by my side.”

The heart of Calontir Falcon is heavy with grief at the loss of one our cousins. Her Excellency, Briana Etain McCorkhill has left us.
Briana was a fixture of Calontir from its earliest times. She will always be remembered as a most excellent clothier and was rarely seen in anything less exquisite garb. Her Excellency was a founding member of the Canton (now Shire) of Cum An Iolar and often served as master of ceremonies for the Walk Through History at Clothiers’ Seminar. Costuming Seminar, as it was called long ago, changed its name to Clothiers’ Seminar at the suggestion of Baroness Briana and others who told us that garb was not costume; garb was clothing.
Throughout her life in the SCA, Briana served to enrich Calontir. She held offices in the Barony of Forgotten Sea and in Cum An Iolar, and was event steward at many events over the years, including many times as event steward for Clothiers’ Seminar. Briana also served as Calontir’s Kingdom Minister of Arts & Sciences and as Baroness of Forgotten Sea, the seventh to hold that stewardship. Briana was fist awarded arms on September 22, A.S. XIX. The same King Shadan and Queen Erzebet further recognized her as a Golden Calon Swan on March 6, A.S. XIX. She was brought into the Order of the Torse on June 2, A.S. XXV by King Tomeeki and Queen Fiona. King Thorvald and Queen Branwyn brought Briana into the Order the Calon Lily on September 4 on A.S. XXIII. She served as Baroness of Forgetten Sea from A.S. XXXIII to XXXVII.  In regonition of longtime service to Calontir King Lorrell III and Queen Cadfael II on  July 28, A.S. LXII.
Briana inspired many through the years. Her research into Italian Renaissance clothing was admired throughout the Known World. She was one of the first in Calontir to share her research and knowledge through the internet. There are many people whom she helped find a path in the SCA. Many of those she inspired are now peers of the realm.
Briana is survived by her husband, Master Modar Neznanich, her housemate Mistress Jadwiga Marina Majewska, and the numerous students of House Leatherwolf. Calontir shares their grief at the passing of this lady. May the light she brought to Calontir be ampliflied by all of those whose lives she touched.

In Memoriam – Master Trevarr of Steelholm

Sad tidings came to Calontir as Spring approached the land. Word arrived that Master Trevarr of Steelholm had passed from this life. In the earliest days of Forgotten Sea and Calontir, the name Steelholm conjured legends. Steelholm was the armory created in the basement of Master Trevarr’s house in Forgotten Sea. Many young fighters who are now Calontir legends themselves made their first armor at Steelholm under the guidance of Master Trevarr and his brother Master James.
Trevarr of Steelholm was first awarded arms in the Society from the Middle Kingdom on July 14 A.S. XV. He and his brother were both brought into the Order of the Silver Hammer on November 18 A.S. XIII. They were the second and thrid companions in that Order. King William I and Queen Mamara I elevated Master Trevarr into the Order of the Laurel on June 22 A.S. XX.
Although he was rarely seen in Calontir in recent years, his impact on the Kingdom’s early days cannot be denied. Master Trevarr left us on March 5, A.S. LVIII. Please raise a cup in honor of his memory.

In Memorium – Countess Caillin MacKenzie

The Arms of Caillin Mackenzie

The Arms of Countess Caillin MacKenzie

Good gentles of the Heartland, we have lost one of the fairest Roses of Calontir. Countess Caillin MacKenzie passed from this life of February 27, AS LVII. Countess Caillin was Winter Queen of Calontir in AS XLII. Caillin was gracious both on the throne off, and her smile was a source brilliance in our Kingdom. As we prepare for Gulf Wars, let us pause to remember this remarkable lady.

When Caillin came to the SCA, she soon found a passion for the art of cookery. She quickly earned renown as cook of unprecedented talent, and received her arms from King Martino I and Queen Ariel I in the summer of AS XXXVII as a Companion to the Order of the Leather Mallet. Her service in feasthall and her service to our Society came to the attention of King Joseph Angus I and Queen Phaedra I who awarded Caillin Companionship to the Order of the Torse on September 20 AS XXXVIII.

Countess Caillin’s efforts were not limited to cookery and service. She donned armor and joined the Falcon Army and gained renown on the field of battle. King Tristram I and Queen Katrine saw her worth to the Falcon Host and invested her a Fyrdman of the Order of the Iren-Fyrd in March of AS XXXIX.  Caillin was a bastion in the Calontir Army and fought with valor and honor. Her deeds on the field came to the notice of King Semjaka and Queen Xorazne who awarded Caillin the distinguished Order of the Sword of Calontir in August of XLI. During her time as Princess and Queen, Caillin fought alongside her army.

Through all, she continued to develop her culinary skills and learning of period cookery.  King Seridan and Queen Sile II recognized her talent and knowledge and welcomed Caillin into the Order of the Silver Hammer in July of AS XXIX. On May 6, AS XLI, Tristram of Lindesfarne carried Caillin’s favor onto the Crown Tournament field in Spinning Winds and emerged victorious. Tristram and Caillin reigned as the 46th Crown of Calontir, and the days of their reign are legendary. As a countess and Companion to the Order of the Rose, Caillin continued her growth as a leader amongst the cooks of Calontir. She taught any who asked the craft of the kitchen, and the Order of the Laurel, King Angelo, and Queen Jane invited her into that order on November 17, AS XLII.

The duties of life brought Caillin to move to Gleann Abhainn. Her absence was noticed by friends who missed her bright smile, her hospitality, and her gracious demeanor. As she enters into her final rest, Calontir sends her family the love and support of the Heartland. As Queen, peer, and generous person, she touched the lives of many in Calontir. She will be greatly missed. Countess Caillin is survived by her husband, Laim Mackenzue, their children and step-children, and Duke Eringlen, her brother. May her memory be a comfort to all thos to whom she was close.

In Memoriam – Lady Mairgreg ingen Ghillebrath

Sad news has reached us from Dun Ard. Lady Mairgreg ingen Ghillebrath succumbed to pneumonia on February 12, AS LVII.
Mairgreg came to the SCA in the Shire of Dun Ard and quickly became a member of the community there. She was awarded arms by King Chrystofer II and Queen Salamandra on March 30 AS XXX.
Friends remember her for talent with needle and thread. Such was her talent in the clothier’s craft, that King Luther and Queen Lenore welcomed her into the Order of Golden Swan in December of AS XXXIII.
Her service to Dun Ard will be remembered as well. She gladly took to whatever tasks present needed to be done. King Eringlen III and Quee Alathea II inducted Mairgreg into the Order of Torse in recognition of her service to Dun Ard on April 17 AS XXXIV.
Though absent from our company for some time, Lady Mairgreg ingen Ghillebrath will be missed by all those whom shared her company. Mairgreg is survived by her husband, Lord Gwylon ap Owen and their daughters.
