The November 2025 Letter of Acceptances and Returns has been published. Here are the results for Calontir.

CALONTIR acceptances

Antonio Arias de Valencia. Alternate name Styrbjorn Ormsson.

Arabella Isidora del Sol. Name and device. Argent, on a sun gules a phoenix Or, a bordure compony Or and azure.

Nice cant!

Balli i Ubbaholl. Name and device. Per pale Or and sable, on a bend a dragon passant counterchanged.

Balli i Ubbaholl. Badge. (Fieldless) A brown squirrel proper winged maintaining a valknut Or.

There is a step from core practice for the use of a valknut.

Deirdre inghean Cormaic. Name and device. Azure, a willow tree argent and an orle argent lozengy azure.

Edmund Parsy. Name and device. Azure, a pall argent semy of hearts palewise gules.

Gabhan mac Aedain. Reblazon of device. Per fess argent and sable, in base a wyvern erect with one foot raised, wings displayed, and tail nowed argent.

Blazoned when registered in July of 1988 as Per fess argent and sable, in base a wyvern passant, wings displayed and tail nowed erect, argent, we are clarifying the posture of the wyvern. Its body is oriented vertically so it is erect. We are also taking this opportunity to update the blazon using current, standard defaults and terminology.

Issabell Saint Charles. Device change. Or, four fleurs-de-lys in cross bases to center, in chief a coronet flory azure, a bordure azure semy-de-lys argent.

Submitted as a ducal coronet, the coronet in this submission is drawn as a coronet flory (which is not reserved for ducal rank) so we have blazoned it as such.

The submitter is a royal peer of ducal rank and thus entitled to display a coronet.

The submitter’s prior device, Azure, a bell argent, a bordure Or semy-de-lis azure, is retained as a badge.

Istvan of Mag Mor. Name (see RETURNS for device).

Mag Mor is the registered name of an SCA branch.

Jacquette DeBrackeleire. Device change. Or chaussé, a human breast gules distilling three gouttes argent.

The submitter’s prior device, Or, on a fess azure cotised sable between three roses azure barbed, seeded, slipped and leaved proper three flames Or, is retained as a badge.

Jane Augusta Sinclair. Badge. Azure, an elephant rampant proper within a four-lobed quadrate cornice Or.

For conflict purposes the elephant is argent, which we ask Morsulus to note in the O&A.

Jóhann Steinarsson. Heraldic title Walker Herald.

Ketill Karlsson. Device change. Or, a wyvern erect with one leg raised contourny sable, a bordure indented gules.

This device does not conflict with the device of Vīryavān ca Tūṣṇīṃ, Or, a monster composed of the foreparts a lion and the hindquarters of a dragon sejant contourny gules winged sable, a bordure indented gules. There is a DC for changing the tincture of half the primary charge, and another for the difference between Vīryavān’s monster and a wyvern.

The submitter’s prior device, Per fess sable and Or, a roundel and a wolf rampant counterchanged, is retained as a badge.

Kolfinna Valdísardóttir. Name and device. Per pale purpure and sable, a chevron fracted Or.

Nice 9th-11th century Old Norse name from Iceland!

Marcus Octavius Valentinus. Name.

Matthias Worcestershire. Badge. Azure, in fess two mascles interlaced, overall a fess Or.

Miyazaki Atsutaka. Badge for Thomas Foulmoth. Per fess vert and gules, a moth argent charged with in fess two mullets voided and interlaced sable and a cockatrice argent.

Morwenna ferch Dafydd. Reblazon of device. Argent semy of dandelions in profile Or slipped and leaved vert, a wooden A-frame plumb-line proper.

Blazoned when registered in August of 2025 as Argent semy of dandelion plants, a wooden A-frame plumb-line proper, the strewn charges are dandelions in profile slipped and leaved, not dandelion plants, which would have multiple stems and flowers.

Rayna Stensdottir. Name.

This name combines a Ukrainian given name and a Swedish byname, an acceptable lingual mix per SENA Appendix C.

Ubbe Hrœreksson. Blanket permission to conflict with name.

The submitter grants blanket permission to conflict with any name that is not identical to their name.

Ubbe Hrœreksson. Blanket permission to conflict with household name Ubbah{o,}ll.

The submitter grants blanket permission to conflict with any name that is not identical to their household name.

Ubbe Hrœreksson. Blanket permission to conflict with device. Vert, in cross a plate between four wolf’s heads couped contourny argent.

The submitter grants blanket permission to conflict for any armory that is not identical to their device.

Ubbe Hrœreksson. Blanket permission to conflict with badge. Vert, in bend sinister two wolf’s heads couped contourny argent.

The submitter grants blanket permission to conflict for any armory that is not identical to their badge.

Véný Andríðardóttir. Name (see PENDS for device).

Submitted as Véný Andríðsdóttir, the patronymic byname was not correctly formed. The old Norse genitive for the masculine given name Andriðr is Andriðar. We have therefore changed this name to Véný Andríðardóttir for registration.

William of Friedrichsburg. Reblazon of device. Per fess Or and vert, two wyverns sejant respectant, each with one foot raised gules, a bordure embattled counterchanged.

Blazoned when registered in September of 1993 as Per fess Or and vert, two wyverns passant respectant gules within a bordure embattled counterchanged, we are clarifying the posture of the wyverns. Their bodies are oriented on an angle, with their weight balanced on their unraised feet and tails, so they are sejant.

CALONTIR returns

Istvan of Mag Mor. Device. Argent, on a pale azure between two roses gules a comet argent.

This device is returned for conflict with the device of Douglass Elisabeth Montgomery, Argent, on a pale azure between two roses proper, a unicorn rampant argent. There is a single DC for changing the type of tertiary charge.

CALONTIR pends

Véný Andríðsdóttir. Device. Azure, in pale a domestic cat courant and a fleur-de-lys per pale Or and argent.

This device is pended to redraw it with a larger fleur-de-lys. As submitted the fleur-de-lys is significantly smaller than the cat such that it appears to be a secondary charge.

This was item 21 on the Calontir letter of August 5, 2025.

October 2025 Letter of Acceptances and Returns

The Bavarian Herald Jörg Rügen around 1510. Public Domain in the US

The October 2025 Letter of Acceptances and Returns has been published. Here are the results for Calontir.

CALONTIR acceptances

Aia Gold-Bearer. Badge. (Fieldless) Within and conjoined to the blade of a sickle inverted Or a sprig of mistletoe vert fructed argent.

Aia Gold-Bearer. Badge. Gules, a skull per pale sable and argent, a bordure embattled argent.

Aveline de Morton. Name and device. Per pale invected vert and argent semy-de-lys vert, a weeping willow tree eradicated argent and a brown stoat rampant proper.

Artist’s note: Please draw fewer and larger fleurs-de-lys.

Cadwgan Sadilgos. Name and device. Per bend engrailed gules and sable, a goose rising wings displayed and a jester’s bauble bendwise Or.

Chiaretta da Chachavo. Device. Per bend flory counter-flory vert and Or, a rabbit rampant maintaining an artist’s paintbrush argent and a lily gules slipped and leaved vert.

Corotica of Ansteorra. Name.

Ansteorra is the registered name of an SCA branch.

Éadaoin inghean Chionaodha. Alternate name Emeludt Kühl and badge. (Fieldless) On a chemise Or a harpy vert.

As it has been over a decade since the last registration of a chemise we take this opportunity to redocument the charge. A chemise is a period charge, found in the arms of Mondunno in the 16th C Grand armorial colorié (Paris, BnF, ms. Français 5232), f. 541v.

Submitters and consulting heralds are reminded that charges that have not been registered in a decade (and charges that have never been registered before) should be documented as part of the submission.

Erik inn grái Haraldsson. Device change. Sable, a bear’s head erased argent between an increscent, a decrescent and a crescent pendant Or.

This device conflicts with the badge of Hroerekr Steinbjarnarson, Sable, a bear’s head erased argent muzzled gules crowned of a county coronet Or, with a DC for adding the crescents but no difference for removing the muzzle or crown. However, Hroerekr Steinbjarnarson has provided permission to conflict, allowing this device to be registered.

Kitsumi Hisamoto. Device. Sable, on a tortoise-shell plate sable marked, a bladed katabami Or.

This is the defining instance of a bladed katabami in Society armory. This is a period Japanese heraldic charge representing a wood sorrel leaf with blades between the lobes. A bladed katabami is considered to be equivalent to a three-petaled flower for the purposes of conflict.

Oleg Veleslavich. Device. Or, a pale azure, overall a bear’s head cabossed proper.

Sem’iyye bint Tahir al-Hindi. Alternate name Eufemia Lotharsdochter and badge. Per bend sable and argent, in bend six woodlice bendwise sinister two, two, and two counterchanged.

This is the defining instance of woodlice in Society armory. Woodlice may be a period charge; the arms of Lässe, in Wappenbuch der Arlberg-Bruderschaft, p. 751 include a charge that certainly look like woodlice. Even if they aren’t, woodlice lived in areas where humans lived in period, so are acceptable as a constructed charge under SENA A2B2b.

The arrangement of two rows of charges in bend is unusual, but is attested in the period example. Without evidence that this arrangement was considered different from it in period, it will be considered equivalent to six charges in their default arrangement on either side of a divided field. We decline to rule at this time as to the registerability of this arrangement on an undivided field.

Sven Fálkason. Device. Per chevron throughout vert and argent, a pomme.

Tatiana Nikonovna Besprozvannyja. Badge. (Fieldless) On a cushion erminois a domestic cat couchant guardant azure.

Zacharias Wolff. Device. Vert, a wolf courant Or vested of a helmet and cuirass argent and on a chief Or a torteau.

Nice cant!

There were no CALONTIR returns this month.

September 2025 Letter of Acceptances and Returns

The September 2025 Letter of Acceptances and Returns has been published. Here are the results for Calontir.

CALONTIR acceptances

Bawdwyn Kaye. Alternate name Violetta Ilaria della Bianca.

Bjarki Vikarsson. Badge. (Fieldless) On a flame gules a wolf’s head cabossed argent.

Bróðir Bragason. Badge. (Fieldless) A bat-winged skull Or.

The submitter has permission to conflict with the badge of Giuseppe Francesco da Borgia, Per saltire gules and sable, a cherub Or.

Casilda de Carcassonne. Name and device. Per fess sable and argent, in saltire five roundels counterchanged.

This name combines a Spanish given name with a French byname, an acceptable lingual mix per SENA Appendix C.

Elína Jakobsdóttir. Name.

Submitted as Elina Jakobsdóttir, accents must be used consistently across a name. The given name is documented in Geirr Bassi as Elína, while the given name as submitted is Elina. After consulting with the submitter, we have changed this name to Elína Jakobsdóttir for registration.

Kolla K{o,}ttr. Name.

Marguerita of Three Rivers. Name and device. Per pale azure and vert, a gorgon’s head within a bordure argent.

Three Rivers is the registered name on an SCA branch.

Nahama Pahavesi. Name change from Adelaide Dewy.

Nahama is the submitter’s legal given name.

It should be noted that the attestation for the submitter’s legal name did not meet the requirements for attestation as outlined in AH IV.C.2. However, based on concern for keeping PII confidential, several other submissions that do not follow the exact requirement, and prior precedent, we direct Palimpsest to open a Rules Letter to modify AH IV.C.2 with updated wording that is consistent with current practice. See the Cover Letter for more information.

The submitter’s prior name, Adelaide Dewy, is released.

Nesscia inghean Chearnaigh. Alternate name Penba Nisa.

Ragnar Markusson. Name and device. Per pale and per chevron gules and argent, a raven sable.

Nice 14th century Swedish name!

Sarra the Brave. Name and device. Azure semy of sheep statant to sinister, on a chief argent a drop spindle azure.

The byname the Brave is a lingua Societatis translation of the Middle English le Belde, dated to 1317/1318.

Tanneke Groenlaken. Alternate name Heynryck Groenlaken.

Vercingetorix of the Treveri. Name.

Submitted as Vercingetorix of __ Treveri, as the Treveri were a tribe of people, rather than referring to a geographical area, the definite article should be used in constructing the ethnonymic byname, making this name Vercingetorix of the Treveri.

However, commenters raised concerns as to whether the name Vercingetorix, meaning “High Warrior King”, was a given name, a title, or an epithet used for the specific person, Vercingetorix, who led the Gaulish revolt against Rome circa 51 BCE. There is evidence to suggest that all of the name elements were used in Celtic and Gaulish personal names (https://www.asnc.cam.ac.uk/personalnames/search.php?s_element=uer-, https://www.asnc.cam.ac.uk/personalnames/search.php?s_element=king(et)o-, and https://www.asnc.cam.ac.uk/personalnames/search.php?s_element=ri:go- ), suggesting that use of all the elements in a single name is plausible. Further, Tangwystyl’s article “A Consideration of Pictish Names” (https://www.s-gabriel.org/names/tangwystyl/pictnames/pict2.html) argues that Vercingetorix is a reasonable Pictish name.

Academic scholarship remains divided as to whether this was an epithet or simply the chieftain’s given name. Additionally, unlike, say Boudiccia, where we have later examples of women named as such, we have no other examples of men named Vercingetorix. Whether this is due to a lack of data, or due to the name actually being an epithet, is unknown.

If this is a title or epithet, then an enthnonymic byname would be an unmistakable claim to rank. At this point in time, we are giving the submitter the benefit of the doubt, and registering this name.

However, going forward, given the singular example of the name, the name meaning “high warrior king”, the probability of appearing to claim an unearned rank is high. Therefore, we will treat this name much like the given name Regina as discussed in SENA PN4B1. That is to say we will not register Vercingetorix as a given name when combined with a locative or a ethnonymic, but will with other forms of byname. We direct Palimpsest to add a note to the standard source errata article indicating that while the name is mentioned in “A Consideration of Pictish Names”, it will be treated similarly to the given name Regina.

We thank Derelei filia Uoret for her invaluable discussion on Celtic and Gaulish onomastics.

Vladimir Karlsson. Name change from Sata Takezou.

This name combines a Russian given name with a Norse byname, an acceptable lingual mix per SENA Appendix C.

The submitter’s prior name, Sata Takezou, is retained as an alternate.

Zaneta Baseggio and Amon Attwood. Joint household name Sign of the Mug and Key.

CALONTIR returns

Vercingetorix of the Treveri. Device. Vert chaussé, a tree blasted and eradicated Or.

This device is returned for conflict with the device of Unna Rose, Vert chaussé, a tree eradicated Or its trunk transfixed by an arrow fesswise argent. There is a single DC for removing the arrow.

August 2025 Letter of Acceptances and Returns

The Bavarian Herald Jörg Rügen around 1510. Public Domain in the US

The August 2025 Letter of Acceptances and Returns has been published. Here are the results for Calontir.

CALONTIR acceptances

Avraham ben David haKuzari. Alternate name Avraham d’Ariege.

Submitted as Avraham d’Ariége, the documentation provided does not support the use of the acute accent. We have therefore changed this to the documented Avraham d’Ariege for registration.

Epikrat{e-}s Skyrios. Name change from Ulfgeirr Þórkelsson and badge. (Fieldless) A card-pique checky gules and argent.

Nice classical Greek name!

The submitter’s prior name, Ulfgeirr Þórkelsson, is retained as an alternate.

Frithuswith inghean Ui Cremthainn. Badge. Purpure, a needle bendwise inverted argent.

Gerald of Ipsley. Heraldic title Loggerhead Herald.

We could not document the term Loggerhead as a heraldic charge meaning “leopard’s face” to period. The only references we could find to this are in the modern blazon of the Arms of Shrewsbury. Fortunately, commenters were able to document the word loggerhead to period as the name of various birds and sea-creatures, any of which could be heraldic charges. Also, in these cases, loggerhead is the modern English name for these birds and sea-creatures, and can be used under the lingua Societatis allowance. Therefore, we are able to give the submitter the benefit of the doubt and register this heraldic title.

Gerald of Ipsley. Badge. (Fieldless) A wave azure.

The wave depicted in this submission is found in the period mon of Saito Dosan. As a charge clearly attested to period, the form in this submission is registerable without a step from core practice.

The semi-circular depiction of wave found in modern Japanese heraldry, which was registered to Rhys of Anglesey in March 2023 (reblazoned elsewhere on this letter), was registered as a step from core practice, since it could not be confirmed to be period. Without evidence that this style of wave is period, it will no longer be registerable.

We see no compelling reason to distinguish in blazon between Japanese waves and the western crested wave that has been unregisterable since February 1983.

Jochi Kara. Name and device. Or, a monkey’s head cabossed per pale sable and vert.

Michele dei Medici. Reblazon of device. Per pale gules and azure, on a chevron between three skimmers argent two rapiers in chevron, the dexter azure and the sinister gules.

Reblazoned in January 2019 as Per pale gules and azure, on a chevron between three ladles in profile argent two rapiers in chevron, the dexter azure and the sinister gules, we are clarifying that the secondary charges are skimmers. The skimmers are in their default orientation. See the Cover Letter for further details.

Michele dei Medici. Reblazon of badge. Per fess gules and azure, a skimmer and a rapier both fesswise reversed argent.

Blazoned when registered in January 2019 as Per fess gules and azure, a ladle in profile and a rapier both fesswise reversed argent, we are clarifying that the primary charge is a skimmer. A skimmer is in profile by default. See the Cover Letter for further detail.

Morwenna ferch Dafydd. Name change from Victoria de Reuthbenden and device. Argent semy of dandelion plants, a wooden A-frame plumb-line proper.

The submitter’s prior name, Victoria de Reuthbenden, is released.

The plumb-line in this submission resembles one found in the grey period Insignia Gentilia, item 163, https://dpul.princeton.edu/catalog/db78tk026.  (see plate 49)

Nyx Shemon. Name and device. Per chevron argent and sable, a chevron ployé gules and in chief a pheon and a threaded needle sable.

The byname was submitted under the Legal Name Allowance, however, the submitter need not rely on that, as the byname Shemon is documentable to 1578 England.

Nice late 16th century English name!

Onami Ryome. Reblazon of device. Sable, between two waves in annulo conjoined at the base a dragonfly argent.

Reblazoned January 2025 as Sable, between two Japanese waves in annulo conjoined at the base a dragonfly argent, the style of the wave and the number of crests are unblazonable artistic details.

Roise inghean ui Ruaidhri. Device change. Gules, on a fess rayonny argent between two needles fesswise Or three roses proper.

The submitter’s prior device, Gules, on a fess rayonny argent between two arrows fesswise reversed Or three roses proper, is released.

Rose of Wolfscairn. Name and device. Quarterly argent and azure, in saltire a rose purpure slipped and leaved vert and an arrow inverted argent, on a chief embattled vert three pine trees argent.

Wolfscairn was submitted under the Branch Name Allowance; however, Elisabetta Makejoye was able to construct it as an Early Modern English locative, meaning that we do not need to use the Branch Name Allowance here.

Rowena Gordon Dunlop. Name and device. Azure, on a saltire between in pale two stag’s heads couped argent a unicorn’s head couped azure.

Rowena is the submitter’s legal middle name. As a given name by type, it may be used as a given name.

Viktor von Rosswald. Name.

von Rosswald is the Society byname of the submitter’s legal parent and is used here under the Existing Registration Allowance.

Zacharias Wolff. Name.

Nice name for 1497 Nürnberg, Germany!

CALONTIR returns

Dorcas Whitecap. Badge. (Fieldless) A tree stump proper.

This badge is returned for conflict with the badge of Lorn Mac Ewen, (Fieldless) The trunk of a tree couped sprouting three slips proper. There is a DC for fieldlessness, but nothing for removing the small branches on Lorn’s badge, which are an artistic detail not worth difference.

Submitted as a badge for Mistle Thrush Herald, we can’t associate a badge with a heraldic title. Submitters are not allowed to register armory for officers that fall under the auspices of Society-level officers that have registered badges. As the College of Arms has a badge for heralds, Vert, two straight trumpets in saltire, bells to chief Or, badges for subsidiary offices, including Heralds Extraordinary, may not be registered. The sole exception to this rule is for tinctureless seals for principal heralds of kingdoms, under SENA A3A2.
