Drakenfjord Songbook Taken Down

The Drakenfjord songbook, Bardic Babblings, has been taken down.

Katrin Karlsdottir, the compiler of the songbook, issued this statement on the SCA BARDS email list:

I am very sorry to all whose works are in the Bardic Babblings file
currently up on the Drakenfjord website. The Book is a copy of my
personal lyric sheet collection with my annotations regarding where
they all came from trimmed out and a few articles I was using to teach
a bardic class It was never supposed to be published at all! Now that
I am aware the files were thrown together and published I am working
to get it taken down asap.

She later reported:

I got it down. I have no idea how long it has been up. I pulled the
whole library page until we can double check copyright information on
everything!

Again, my sincere apologies to all.

You’ll Never Leave this War Alive — a Contrafactum

Tune “You’ll Never leave Harlan Alive” by Darrell Scott
Lyrics by Lord Vincenzo Traina. mka Mark Lavette

In the deep dark hills of Southern Calontir
Is the place where I lived my whole life
And it’s there that I read on a moss covered gravestone
You will never leave this war alive
Well my family is proud to heed the call of the kingdom
And my Kin has raised many a stone
But this Last call to Duty has left me thinking
I will never leave this war alive

When the Sun comes up, we’ll be lined up in formation
And the sun gives off …to our enemies surprise
And we fill our cups whatever bitter brew we’re drinking
And you spend you free time thinking of how to get away

Now the kingsman said there was gold from our enemies
It will go to all who survive
But last night I saw they carried him in linen
And he never left this war alive

When the Sun comes up, we’ll be lined up in formation
And the sun gives off …to our enemies surprise
And we fill our cups whatever bitter brew we’re drinking
And you spend you free time thinking of how to get away

My wife sold our land and left out with a tinker
Saying her son will learn to survive
And My ghost followed them
as they rode out through the battlefield
Yes He will leave this war Alive

When the Sun comes up, we’ll be lined up in formation
And the sun gives off …to our enemies surprise
And we fill our cups with whatever bitter brew we’re drinking
And you spend you free time thinking of how to get away

When the Sun comes up, we’ll be lined up in formation
And the sun gives off …to our enemies surprise
And we fill our cups whatever bitter brew we’re drinking
And you spend you free time thinking of how to get away

Shakespearean Puppet Competition at Northern Oaken War Maneuvers

Reposted from the SCA Bards email list:

IT’S OFFICIAL!!!!

Crazy Llyw and Lady J, proprietors of the infamous Magic Carpet Kavehane, invite all those fond of creating alter-egos out of inanimate materials to test their mettle against their fellow artisans in the first-ever (to our knowledge) Shakespearean Puppet Competition.

Said sawdust smack-down will happen Friday night of the Northern Oaken War Maneuvers (presented by the Barony of Cleftlands/Shire of Falcon’s Quarry), June 5th, Wellington, Ohio, at O Dark Thirty. Location will be the Magic Carpet  Kavehane.

Rules are as follows

  • Present a song, sonnet or scene from Shakespeare (or the Shakespearean Theater scene?) of no more than six minutes in length.
  • Puppets may be of any non-hazardous material—handmade preferable, commercial also permissible, but consult criteria below. No size limits on puppets, however, those who wish to perform with larger than life size puppets please contact the Impresarios well in advance of your intent.

A 3 ½ foot wide stage with a tasteful backdrop, roughly 4 feet off of the ground will be provided.

Judging Criteria

  • Scope– level of difficulty—including construction of puppets, additional scenery, use of musical instruments, etc. If you choose to utilize a commercial puppet, consideration will made for creative costuming and use.
  • Creativity-choice of literary material, adaptation of content and medium, presentation–style of puppet.
  • Authenticity—recognizing that the will be a need for adaptation and editing in most cases, entry will be judged on how close the performance comes to the style and spirit of the Elizabethan Era.

Grand Prize is still under discussion but will be—grand.

Dirge for The Falcons

From Lord Da’ud ibn Ibrahim al-Sisari, mka Adam Elkan-Hale, via Facebook:

After reading Andromir’s post regarding the death of our Kingdom’s birds, I was inspired to a write a song. The link below is to a recording of Johanna singing the piece.

Dirge for The Falcons

From seacoast lands did the host march home
Hearts and minds did soar
Telling tales of the war fray’s work
Wishing for one day more

Then loudly cried Lord Andromir
With story of fire and woe
Master Freidrich’s wagon burns
All is lost in tow

Calontir has her falcons lost
Her mighty birds of prey
The Knowne World weeps with Calontir
This black and mournful day

Talons, beaks were razor sharp
Like Calon army’s spears
Your eyes saw far with keen cold glance
Our eyes now shed tears

Calontir has her falcons lost
The Singing Kingdom weeps
Bright Cal’trava’s shine is dimmed
Calon birds now sleep

Cinnamon, Artemis, and kestrel R’an
Lady and Winter white
Fly to Valhalla, to Odin’s arm
Feast on flesh tonight

Calontir has her falcons lost
Empty the Heartland skies
Hearts are heavy, but in your names
Gold falcons shall ever fly

Hearts are heavy, but in your names
Gold falcons shall ever fly
