From Their Royal Majesties: The Cancellation of Lilies 2021

Unto the populace of Calontir and the Known Worlde. Our dauntless people and stalwart cousins.

It is often the privilege of the Royalty of Calontir to bring great joy to populace. We get to give awards, muster armies, and recognize great achievements; but occasionally it is our responsibility to make tough choices and to deliver unwelcome news. Today, unfortunately, is the latter.

In consultation with the Lilies Event Stewards and the Lilies Committee, We feel it is necessary to cancel Fall Lilies.

Currently, Covid-19 infection rates and hospitalizations are at the same level, or higher in some areas, as they were this time last year. We feel that this would be poor timing for a large, multi-day, inter-Kingdom event at a site with limited hygiene facilities. We know that these numbers could change over the course of nearly a month, but have decided to make this announcement now, out of a preference for caution when it comes to the wellbeing of Our populace and to ensure that everyone was given enough forewarning to make adjustments in their plans

For now, We intend to continue having regular local weekend events. These smaller events allow us as a Kingdom to continue with the business and fun of the SCA while limiting possible exposures and continuing our protocols of contract tracing and health guidelines compliance. As of now there will be no changes to the Calontir Guidelines that We published in an earlier missive and the rest of the Kingdom Calendar remains unchanged.

It has been wonderful to see you all at events again and we desperately wish to continue to do so. However, we must remain dedicated to the health and safety priorities we are all dependent on, and Our commitment to our communities is as strong and stoic as ever.

We are positive many of you have pre-registered, and you will be getting more information regarding your refunds in a few days.

If you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to reach out to us via our email, Falcon-Crown@Calontir.org.

From Their Royal Majesties

Ave Calontirii,

Some brief announcements that may not yet have come to your ears. Please feel free to forward far and wide.

Our Crown Tournament will be held on October 9th in the Barony of Mag Mor.

Unfortunately, this will conflict with this year’s Fall Gulf Wars XXX, so We will not be calling a muster for the war.

With that being said, We are accepting Letters of Intent to fight in Our Crown Tournament at this time.

If you wish to compete, please submit your letter to Us and the Kingdom Seneschal no later than September 25th. This due date is the same weekend as Masters of the Duel.

In accordance with Section VI of Kingdom Law:

  • Any resident combatant and consort may submit a Letter of Intent.
  • The letter must include proof of residence within Calontir and active paid membership with the SCA

We would also ask you for a few sentences on why you wish to be the Crown Prince and Princess of Calontir.

From Their Royal Majesties: Current Rules for Calontir Event Attendance

Calontir,

We know that the current rules for events and gatherings are changing frequently, so wanted to provide some clarity with where our current Kingdom rules differ from the BoD minimum requirements.

This list will also be uploaded [to the Calontir Facebook, and (PDF attached) if you would like to have a copy available at events or meetings for any reason.

If you have questions feel free to ask—Our email is always open, but please apply these in the spirit of safety in which they are intended, refrain from Rules lawyering, and DON’T BE THE REASON WE HAVE TO MAKE ANOTHER RULE.

Current Rules for Calontir Event Attendance (as of 8/5/21)

  • These rules apply to both events and local meetings, practices, and gatherings.
  • These rules are in addition to, not in place of, the Society level rules from the BoD.
  • These rules are the MINIMUM requirements, and local group leadership may enact more stringent requirements if the local health conditions warrant.
  • All Local, State, and Federal Guidelines are to be followed, including masking and gathering size limits.
  • All attendees to any event, meeting, or practice, must be signed in on a roster including current accurate contact information.
  • If you are fully vaccinated and it has been long enough that the vaccine will have reached maximum efficacy, you may choose not to wear a mask while outdoors.
  • Everyone must mask indoors, regardless of vaccination status.
  • Masks must be worn covering the nose and mouth.
  • You may bring your own food to an event and you may share it with others.
  • Food may be served in an official capacity, such as an inn or vigil table, with the following requirements:
    • Anyone making or handling food must be masked and gloved
    • Anyone serving food or in the preparation or serving areas but not actually handling food must be masked.
  • If you would usually be required to be masked, you must distance a minimum of 6 feet to unmask for eating or drinking.
    • Vaccinated members of the populace may be closer than 6 feet outdoors, but must still distance to eat or drink indoors.
    • Unvaccinated members of the populace must distance at least 6 feet to eat or drink both indoors and out.
  • Feasts will not be allowed at this time.
  • Water Bearing may be provided from the communal coolers, but only into personal containers, not our traditional shared jugs.

Requests from the Crown

  • If you are medically able to get the Covid Vaccine, please do so.
  • Please do not attend gatherings if you are not feeling well.
  • Please respect the comfort levels of those who wish to follow more stringent masking and distancing practices than are strictly required
  • The SCA is an organization of chivalry and community. Please remember these values and help us all set a good example for the rest of the Known World.

Announcements: From Their Royal Majesties, Re: Resolution to Further Lift Suspension of In-Person Activity in the SCA as of August 1, 2021

Reposted from Facebook

Unto the People of Calontir,

Yesterday the Society announced the repeal of some of the restrictions on our SCA experience, beginning August 1. Those new directives can be found here:

Resolution to Further Lift Suspension of In-Person Activity in the SCA as of August 1, 2021

Know that We hear your concerns and continue to monitor the rising Covid numbers within our borders.

We will continue to help strictly enforce all Local, State, and Federal Guidelines at both events and local practices and meetings, and expect Our local group leadership to do so as well. We strongly encourage vaccination for all who can do so. Please help protect those of us who have legitimate medical restrictions and cannot get vaccinated themselves. We ask that everyone take the responsibility of their health, and the health of our community very seriously.

Please respect personal boundaries, wear masks when rules or personal comfort dictate. (As of now our masking rules are not changing: Those who have been fully vaccinated may be unmasked if they wish while outdoors.) Remember that we must still follow all official masking guidelines for the location of an event, and be cognizant of the fact that if you are traveling from an area of higher risk to attend an event, you may still wish to mask up for the safety of others.

Please do not attend events if you do not feel well.

While the most recent science indicates that the unvaccinated are still at the greatest risk of extreme symptoms, this does not mean the vaccine is a perfect defense. This new Delta variant is much more contagious, and the vaccinated can still contract and spread it to others.

The pandemic is not yet ended but we can, for now, continue to enjoy each other’s company and the SCA responsibly.

We may not be masked 100% of the time, but if you approach either of Us in conversation or in court while wearing a mask, We will do so as well to ensure the comfort of Our populace.
The SCA is an organization of chivalry and community. Please remember these values and help set a good example for the rest of the Known World.

Announcement: From TRM, In Person Events for the Month of June Canceled

Gleaned from Facebook:

Heartlanders,

First, We want to thank all of you, again, who have taken it upon yourselves to see that the not only the business of the SCA continues, but that the dream remains alive and well. The local group meetings, classes, singing, and round tables on fighting and the virtues have been wonderful. If we take anything away from our relative isolation We would love to see these kinds of open discussions, comradery, and self-enrichment continue for all.

Mid-May has come, and we owe you some answers. Thank you for your patience as we have consulted with our Baronages, advisors, and State and CDC guidelines to bring you news for June. Each of the states comprising Calontir has provided different guidance about resuming normal industry and recommendations on the size limit of gatherings. If you have not already, We encourage you to seek out those recommendations for your municipalities, familiarize yourselves with them, and continue to make the choices that are safest for you and your families.

Hopefully you will understand that, given the nature of our Society, travel between groups is ingrained in our culture, and We must make a choice for the whole of Calontir. Between that and the guidelines currently limiting gathering sizes,

We will be continuing the suspension all official SCA in person activities through the month of June.

We have already been in contact with the Witan and are in the very beginning stages of planning an online Calon-Con. If you are a reporting deputy within one of the Kingdom Offices with resources for hosting online meetings and you are willing to help, please reach up through your reporting structure.

Her Majesty, the Kingdom Seneschal, and I have been in contact with the Society to obtain variances allowing us to host Crown Tournament on a first feasible date basis. There will be much more information to come when it is available.

Your continued and constant fortitude has been astounding. The weight of waiting would have broken a lesser people. Constancy will see us through, but here I must remind myself of Marcus Aurelius, “Be tolerant with others and strict with yourself”. Set the example you wish to see in others.

Lilies, Crown Tournament, and Coronation Postponed

Below is the complete text of TRMs posting to the Kingdom Facebook page. Main highlights are:

  • Lilies is postponed. Event stewards and staff are working on plans for a scaled down version in the fall.
  • Crown Tournament is postponed to a future date, when it can be safely held.
  • Coronation will be postponed, with the intent of giving future heirs at least a month before elevation
  • No plans to hold virtual courts

Good evening Calontir!

First, we appreciate everyone who attended our Q&A session this evening. Your concern for your fellow Calontiri heartens us. For those of you unable to attend, we know that it was short notice, but hopefully this message will cover most of the high points for you. Many of you have, until now, had a lot of unasked questions and uncertainty. We hope that this has helped alleviate those fears.

Along those lines, while we all labor with the uncertainty of the pandemic it has been Our task to keep Kingdom morale high, and to do our best to help you meet those needs from our home. Using that as a metric, last week we failed you. We apologize to you all for that and we will strive to do better. Further, if you find yourselves unhappy with the SCA, the Kingdom, or the management of your local groups under our restrictions we accept that blame as well. Please direct that ire where it belongs – on us.

Here is a very brief summary of the announcements we made this evening

-In light of the most recent health guidelines and information released by both Missouri and Iowa on Monday 4/27, We are postponing Lilies. The event stewards and staff are working hard on plans for a scaled down Lilies in the fall, and details on that will be released as they are available. While we will all miss our usual Summer, His Majesty and I are looking forward to this and greatly appreciate the efforts of everyone working to still give us that Lilies experience a little further down the road. We cannot thank them enough for time they have given and the dedication they have shown to the Kingdom.

-Because of this postponement, Our Crown Tournament is also postponed. Our current intent is to hold it as soon as it is safely possible, and We will be investigating options for that. We are working with the Society to obtain variances for several possibilities. We thank them for their willingness to work us to see that our Customs and Traditions are preserved.

-As far as other June activities are concerned, We will be maintaining our previously stated method of making decisions on a month-by-month basis and will be evaluating the possibility of smaller events, meetings, and practices for June in mid-May. We want to thank the Barons and Seneschals and Kingdom Reeve for their continued patience and support.

-With Crown Tourney postponed to an uncertain future date, Coronation must be as well. We hope to have heirs as soon as we can safely do so, and to give them at least a month to enjoy being heirs and to organize for their own reign and the continued betterment of all Calontir.

-All of these postponements lead to the necessity of seeking a variance for the extension of our own reign. We had hoped to avoid this deviation from tradition, but it has been made unavoidable by the current circumstances. We will be working to find the best possible solutions for finding our heirs to follow us in maintaining Calontir and hope that We have your patience and understanding while We do so.

The following are some additional notes based on your questions and comments:

-Please do keep the business of the SCA as active as you can – planning events, seeing to the local books, and reports. We do not know what the future time tables will be for events, and we understand that some details may be hard to pin down with not all businesses and site locations open, but if we are not planning for upcoming events now, there will be nothing to attend when the time comes and we are able to be together again.

-We do not have any plans for Virtual Courts. Those that have happened in other Kingdoms have mostly been due to the necessity of having heirs step up. The business we have outstanding, elevations specifically deserve more than an electronic thank you.

-Many had kind words for us on the reign so far and we wanted to acknowledge our entire royal household, and specifically Mistress Jorunn and Mistress Gabby for the incredible amount of effort that they have put in behind the scenes keeping us organized and making us look good. Similarly, Mistress Rochwen has been instrumental in organizing and creating the beautiful scrolls for awards that we have given and many that we have yet to give. They all deserve more thanks than we can possibly express.

These times are difficult for everyone. We know that you feel strained, patience is tried, tempers are short, and fear whispers to you. We know what to do and we know how to do it, but to stare unwavering at uncertainty is eventually bound to shake even the most dauntless.

Pick your friends and siblings up. Help them stand strong so that they may do so for you in turn. Hold Fast Calontir.

Until death take Us, The world end, or Our rightful heir take this burden from Us.

From Their Royal Majesties: ZOOM Populace Discussion of Current State of the Kingdom

This information is gleaned from a Facebook event page, and edited to apply to those not on Facebook:

We know that many of you have questions about the current state of things within the kingdom and, rather than continued guesses and speculation, We invite you to join Us for a Calontir Q&A via Zoom on Tuesday 4/28 from 7:30 to 8:30pm.

This is not an SCA event or a court – just a way for us to try to address at one time all who have questions or are interested in hearing those of others. We will not be able to answer every single question that you have, because some things We just don’t have answers to, but We will do our best to pass on to you any information and assuage any fears that We can…

To prevent chaos and confusion, we will be muting all participants at the beginning of the call and unmuting one at a time to allow them to ask their questions. If you would like to speak, please use the raise hand function and we will do our best to answer questions in the order they come up. You can also use the chat window to ask questions, if you prefer.

If you have questions that you want to be sure We answer or that may require Us to do a little digging before hand, please feel free to post them on here, so that We can have the chance to get the information you are looking for.

We hope to see all interested members of the populace on Tuesday evening and look forward to hopefully putting your minds at ease.

Lucian and Tamar

From Their Royal Majesties: All Calontir Events Canceled for Month of May

Gleaned from Facebook

All Calontiri,

It is with no small amount of disappointment that Her Majesty Tamar and I will be canceling all Calontir events for the Month of May.

In the past few days we have heard from leaders of our Cities and States. Missouri has announced that they will begin phasing out stay at home activities as they begin reopening “non-essential business” starting May 4th, Kansas has similar plans to begin on May 3rd, Nebraska on May 1, and Iowa on May 3rd. The Cities of Kansas City and St. Louis have extended their stay at home orders until Mid-May.

The common theme among these announcements at this time is, that while every civil community is optimistic, we are not yet prepared for large unessential gatherings. We know that this is not the news you wanted to hear, and it is certainly not the news we wished to deliver. We do believe that it is the best course of action.

We will continue to reassess as time passes and with all of us safe and healthy hope to continue our regular schedule soon.

You have all been amazing in these trying times. We appreciate all the extra effort you have given over the past few weeks and it gladdens us to see you all embrace our common cause. You stalwarts. You Dauntless.

To do other than we have chosen would potentially sacrifice many of you needlessly and that we could not abide.

Semper Fidelis

From Their Majesties: Crown Tournament Postponed

Stalwarts,

This morning Tamar and I woke to the drizzle here on our estates and could for a moment pretend it was the patter of rain on canvas. This #virtualgulfwars has been good for our souls, and ask you to continue finding ways to rally and support one another.

But this morning also bears bad news, I have heard the first “friend of a friend” reports, and while Calontir by and large stands strong and healthy the rest of the Known Worlde does not fair as well.

Given the National State of Emergency, the suggestions of the Board, and the advice and wisdom we have been able to gather;
We will be extending the suspension of organized Calontir SCA activities through April 30.

This means that Spring Crown Tournament has been suspended and is now planned for June 13, 2020, the first weekend of our Lilies War. Letters of intent, therefore, are now due by May 30.

These decisions are made under certain assumptions that no further governmental restrictions arise, but gives us the flexibility to react again if the “all clear” is not given by that time.

We will be constantly reviewing the situation and making adjustments to see to the future of Calontir and the safety of our people.

We want to publicly thank our Witan and Thiegns for their wisdom. Our Baronies, Shires, and Cantons for their Patience. And our People for their Heart.

Your Fealty has our eternal Love.
Your Service has every honor we can bestow.

You will not stand alone.
