From Their Royal Majesties: Consent

Kingdom of Calontir, as King and Queen it is our responsibility to protect our populace. At times, that means asking all of our members to be aware, vigilant, and full of honesty in their interactions.

At this Lilies War, We, in conjunction with Their Highnesses, had a conversation with all of our polling orders about Consent, and talking about it openly among our people. We no longer want these conversations to be hidden, swept under the rug, or not discussed at all.

As unfortunate as it is, the mundane world does find its way into what we all want to be the safest place. We asked all, in all of our order meetings: to watch out for those who may find themselves in a compromising situation; to walk up and be sure our friends are talking to someone they want to talk to; to offer an escort late at night, to someone who might not want to be alone; to be a safe haven to someone who might need to gently find an escape.

As friends and especially for those of us who are Peers of the Realm, we should always be open to listen. In listening, we need to be able to hear all sides of a story. If something illegal has been done, we must encourage those who have been wronged to call the mundane authorities with no fear of retaliation. If nothing illegal has taken place, but inappropriate behavior is thought to have happened, please approach our Kingdom Advocate; take down the information from all parties and follow Society protocol for resolving issues.

This is not only something We are talking about in Kingdom, this is something that is being discussed on the Society level and within all mundane communities as well. We want to create as safe a space as possible for all of our members.

To that end, We had Duchess Isabeau print up the Society approved posters and had them posted around camp. Our Heirs, Prince Anton and Princess Yseult, fully agreed with the importance and intent of this message and did discuss this topic with all of our order meetings for which We were not in attendance. This is just the beginning of the conversation, but it is vital that we ALL participate, so that this Society which we all love can truly be the safe haven that we want it to be. With Love, Donngal and Catalina

From Their Royal Majesties: Letters of Intent and Why We Fight

Unto the Chivalry, Huscarls, Fyrdmen, and Men at Arms of the Kingdom of Calontir, and unto those who inspire them to deeds of greatness,
Greetings, from Donngal, Fourth of that name, King of Calontir, and Catalina, Fierce Queen of the Heartlands. The deadline grows close for submitting letters of intent to contend to become Our heirs. Before that deadline passes, please consider our words:
Different Kingdoms have developed different traditions surrounding Crown Tournament:

Some Kingdoms allow anyone from the Known World to enter, whist others have held that only the Chivalry may enter without an express invitation from the Crown. Our Kingdom Laws reflect a desire, borne from our first days as a Kingdom, that nobody, Crown or common, should be able to influence the outcome, outside of the will of the combatants themselves, and our long-held tradition which states that you shouldn’t enter crown unless you’re there to win it; a pushback against the notion that crown is a good place to be seen by the chivalry.

We were reminded, today, by a good friend’s post from a far Kingdom, that every fighter in the list lends their renown to the eventual victor.

To that end, we ask each of you, fighter and consort, to search your hearts, and if you are ABLE to serve as Crown (as opposed to actively wanting it), then we beseech you, take up pen, then sword, and bring your renown to add to the glory of our eventual heirs, and to the history of our great Kingdom.
In Love and Service to the Crown & Kingdom
]|)onngal & Catalina

From Her Royal Majesty: Period Soup Kitchen Experiment

Küche mit Kachelofen, aus: Kuchenmaistrey, erstmals erschienen 1485 bei Peter Wagner. V

Greetings unto My Glorious Kingdom,

As many of you know well, it brings Me great joy when we take services we provide as a Kingdom and make them as close to historical practices as possible.

In this spirit I have tasked Our Cook’s Guild to take over one day of Soup Kitchen at the upcoming Gulf Wars.

On this single day, the Cook’s Guild will provide provisions that would have been taken on pilgrimage or campaign.

I have requested that the menu for that One day will consist of bone broth, bread, butter, pickled items, meat, and cheeses.

Please contact HL Ysabel de la Oya CooksGuild@calontir.org if you would like to help in the process, or the day of.

As soon as a date is determined for this experiment an announcement will be made.

Catalina, Malika

From Their Majesties and Their Highnesses – The Passing of Titus Scipio Germanicus, HRH Aethelmearc

Our Dearest Kingdom,

We come to you today with heavy hearts. We are sad to announce that His Highness Titus of Aethelmearc, passed away last night after doing what he loved.

We want to clear up any rumors that might be going around. Their Highnesses were attending Battlemoor when he became short of breathe after fighting. He was taken to the hospital where he was found to have a blood clot, and he did pass.

We are so happy for the time we got to spend with them both at Lilies and here at Battlemoor. We please ask that you respect Her Highness’ privacy at this very difficult time. We grieve with Our Royal Cousins and Our Kingdom and thank you all for your understanding of privacy.

A Medieval Moment at Pennsic

We all hear about having a “Medieval Moment” at SCA events, and many of us have had the opportunity to experience one. During the bridge battles at Pennsic this year (AS LI), the entire Calon host got to experience one together.

Part of the strategy of the East Kingdom command this year was to change which bridge units were fighting on between each battle. This meant that Calontir got to face many different opponents, rather than the same one over and over. That made things more interesting, and as it turned out it was a Good Thing(tm).
When we fought on the uppermost wide bridge (bridge #2 for those of you who were lucky enough to be there), we faced Atlantia, or at least a part of Atlantia that included the Atlantian Combat Archers. The rules of the day were that the archers could not come on to the bridges, nor could they station themselves outside of the outermost edge of the wide bridge we were on. (This was to prevent arrows from going in to the crowds on either side.) This meant they were less able to snipe on the outer, wide bridges (like this one). The Atlantian Combat Archers took this in stride, and made the medieval choice.
As Calontir advanced across the bridge, the typical call of “arrow” rang out, warning the army of incoming fire. But as we got closer to the Atlantian end of the bridge, we no longer faced the occasional arrow fired by a sniper, but rather volleys of dozens of arrows at once, causing almost all the shieldmen to raise their shields to protect themselves and those around them. This was something we don’t normally face, and was very cool. But then to add to it, the troops facing us took that opportunity to charge, just as they should have!
They surprised us, killed a number, and pushed us back. It was the right tactic at the right time, and was also quite effective, once. The next time a volley came in (which was still very cool), our artillery was ready, and stopped the charge before it could have the same affect as the previous one. The archers continued to fire in volleys, keeping us on our toes, and it added a lot to the medieval feel of that battle.
After the last battle on Friday, We made an effort to seek out the command staff of the archers We faced on that bridge. Luckily, Baroness Cellach Mor of Ponte Alto was on the field. While expressing her low status in the command structure, she let Us know that it was the Atlantian Combat Archers that We faced. She also promised to pass Our words along to the archers and the troops they trained with.
There are two morals to this story:
  1. Training together is more effective than training alone.
  2. Medieval moments can happen at any time. Just keep your eyes (and mind) open to them.

Crown Tournament Letters of Intent

TRM Logan & Ylva

TRM Logan & Ylva

Part of being a responsible Crown is ensuring the smooth transition from one reign to the next. To that end We are setting forth these requirements for those who would wish to compete in Our Crown list in Lonely Tower this October. Please provide your letter of intent to Us and Our seneschal by September 24th, 2016. You may present them at an event or send an electronic copy to both Falcon-Crown@calontir.org and Seneschal@calontir.org.

We encourage everyone who meets the criteria below to participate. Being Crown of Calontir does take time and effort, but the experience brings more joy than we could have imagined.  You must be willing to serve the Kingdom in this fashion, but not necessarily wishing to with all your being. Taking part in Crown Tournament is a privilege that more people should take advantage of. At no other time can you participate in the selection of your next Sovereign. And who knows, it might be you!

Our requirements for both the combatant and the consort are as follows:

  1. Per kingdom law, you must be familiar with kingdom law, and swear an oath that you are. Please read it.
  2. It is vital that the Crown be able to work together to accomplish great things. Please provide an example of some project that you have worked on together and how you managed it. It needn’t be an SCA project, just an indication that you can deal with each other in somewhat stressful situations.
  3. The Crown makes many decisions that affect the entire Kingdom. To show that you have some knowledge of the breadth and depth of Calontir, please provide a list of the events that both of you have attended (together or separately) in the last 12 months.
  4. Individually, please provide your reasoning for selecting that person to fight for/to carry your favor. What makes them special in your eyes.
  5. For Our seneschal, please provide copies of your proof of membership, which should last through the end of your potential reign. (Should your current membership end before your reign would, you will be required to renew it immediately after winning Crown Tournament)
  6. Also for Our seneschal, please provide proof of residence within Calontir for the past year, or indication that you have been “treaty-ed in” for at least that long. A driver’s license will usually provide this.

We look forward to a wonderful tournament, and hope that everyone will join Us, either on the field or not.
