Update on Youth Combat Activities at Pennsic

Statement issued by the Pennsic staff:

In compliance with new Pennsylvania Commonwealth Law and due to potential medical risk considerations involving martial activities the following policy is now in effect:

Minors authorized in martial activities and bearing a gold tape diamond on their helms on which their parent or legal guardian’s cell phone number is written, may participate in battles. Parents should have the cell phone in hand in case of emergency

Additionally, from the Midrealm Earl Marshal:

NB: The mayor has incorrectly stated that the gold diamond for rapier combatants should be on the helm – it should be on the cuff of the gauntlet, per Society Rules.

Fencing Classes at Lilies

These classes will be conducted near the Cut and Thrust area of the battlefield. Lord Gawin will need a marshal for the Italian Rapier Practice as this will be in full armor. Please see THL Mathurin Kerbusso, C&T Marshal in Charge for the War, to volunteer.

Italian Rapier Practice

This class is part of a week-long series of classes to provide a basis in the Italian rapier systems of Ridolfo Capo Ferro, Salvator Fabris, and Nicoletto Giganti. Each of these classes builds on the previous, so please attend as many as you can manage. Also, please bring your armor for Calontir Steel if you have it. Most of the class time will be dedicated to focused drills. The tentative scheduling is that Day 1 and 2 will focus on forming a good guard and the lunge. Days 3 and 4 will focus on basic defenses. Days 5 and 6 will focus on counters to those defenses, and days 7 and 8 will be used to put it all together.

Time: 3pm – 5pm Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
Location: Near the Calontir Steel List
Instructor: Lord Gawin Kappler (MKA Joe Shaffer)

Fiore’s Dagger Plays

This class will work through the dagger plays of Fiore de Liberi. We will discuss basic defenses against dagger strikes and basic grappling in response to those strikes.

Time: 10am – 11am Wednesday
Location: Near the Calontir Steel List
Instructor: Lord Gawin Kappler (MKA Joe Shaffer)

How to prepare for a Duel in 30 days or less

This class will provide a very basic introduction to how to prepare for a fencing duel in 30 days or less. If you are looking to find a simple introduction to how to defend yourself with a sword, this class is for you.

Time: 10am – 11am Monday
Location: Near the Calontir Steel List
Instructor: Lord Gawin Kappler (MKA Joe Shaffer)

Bardic College “Big Damn Stick” Competition Requirements.

From Lord Janos:

The competition will be held at Bardic Bedlam. I don’t have the dates
handy. (Ed. note:  September 26th at Puddleford)

The requirements are:

Original song, story, or poem. Any theme you like. By ‘original’ I mean:
written for this contest. You can have done it around the campfire a
couple of times, sure, but definitely not entered in a competition before.
In other words, Dorcas could not use Compact between Horse and Man (and
I know she won’t mind me using her as a random example).

After some thought, I am going to go ahead and open it up to past holders
of the BDS.

Filks are allowed, but please announce it as such; fully original pieces
will have an edge.

Pieces will be judged on creativity/appeal, technical aspects (musical
composition for a song, rhythm and meter/rhyme or alliteration for a poem,
or story construction and mechanics for a story), and performance.

Documentation is not required, but if you want to supply a written copy of
the work, or information about the style, then feel free. Feel free to do
a brief introduction as well.

Unofficial Court Report for Horse and Falcons

Drakenfjord Songbook Taken Down

The Drakenfjord songbook, Bardic Babblings, has been taken down.

Katrin Karlsdottir, the compiler of the songbook, issued this statement on the SCA BARDS email list:

I am very sorry to all whose works are in the Bardic Babblings file
currently up on the Drakenfjord website. The Book is a copy of my
personal lyric sheet collection with my annotations regarding where
they all came from trimmed out and a few articles I was using to teach
a bardic class It was never supposed to be published at all! Now that
I am aware the files were thrown together and published I am working
to get it taken down asap.

She later reported:

I got it down. I have no idea how long it has been up. I pulled the
whole library page until we can double check copyright information on
everything!

Again, my sincere apologies to all.

Drakenfjord Songbook Copyright Infringement — UPDATED

TSivia bas Tamara V’Amberview reports that a 1200 page online songbook has come to their attention which contains “…songs unattributed from: Ansteorra, Atenveldt, Calontir, Drachenwald, Ealdormere, Glean Abhann, Lochac, Midrealm, and Outlands. And that was just SKIMMING.”

In most cases these songs have had the names of SCA kingdoms replaced with “Drakenfjord” or similar such changes. Most material is older; some of the songs she has identified belong to Shava reports that she has identified material from Master Hector of the Black Height, Mistress Eleanor Fairchild (Truly Carmichael) , Sir Bela of Eastmarch (Poul Anderson), THL Emer ( Em Holbert), Baldwin of Erebor,Tim Jennings (Garraed), and Morgana Bro Morganwg.

The PDF document states:

If you have any lyric sheets, sheet music or other commentary to add please contact Dame Katrin Karlsdöttir at the email address of Katrin.karlsdottir@gmail.com and pass along whatever information you may posses. For instance many of these pieces are of unknown origin and any notes of where they originated would be appreciated. Also if you are interested in increasing your collection of works many many more can be found archived at the Bardic Bower Website also known as the Bardic Hall… http://bardsbower.multiply.com Many notes and alternant versions can be found there as well. Printed copies of this document are unavalible due to the prohibitive cost of printing and shipping a 1,200 page document. Feel free to print it and distribute it as you will for use within the realms of the organizations that promote the Bardic arts such as Amtgard, The High Fantasy Society, and The Society for Creative Anachronism…

If you recognize any of the unattributed material there, know who wrote it, or if you wrote it, they ask that you email the compiler and ask her to provide proper attribution and obtain permission, or remove the item(s).

http://www.drakenfjord.org/bardic.pdf

The Ealdormere Gazette reported futher details:

It has come to the Gazette’s attention that the Free Kingdom of Drakenfjord (part of the High Fantasy Society in Texas, and formally part of Amtgard) has compiled a lengthy publication called Bardic Babblings.

Unfortunately, the compiler of this tome has taken works from numerous bards of the Society for Creative Anachronism (as well as other modern artists) without permission, and has not included any credit or copyright whatsoever. These versions of the Society’s bards were also apparently housed on a website called the Bardic Bower (which is now defunct).

Although the compiler, attributed as Dame Katrin Karlsdöttir, claims that “many of these pieces are of unknown origin” it seems unlikely that all these pieces by the Society’s modern day bards would have been discovered with no credit or copyright noted.

Officers of Drakenfjord are listed on their website. The High Fantasy Society website has no contacts listed, and appears to be years out of date, though they do also have an active Forum and a Facebook group.

[Update: Bardic Babblings has also been published on a site called Yumpu.]
