Fencing Classes at Lilies

These classes will be conducted near the Cut and Thrust area of the battlefield. Lord Gawin will need a marshal for the Italian Rapier Practice as this will be in full armor. Please see THL Mathurin Kerbusso, C&T Marshal in Charge for the War, to volunteer.

Italian Rapier Practice

This class is part of a week-long series of classes to provide a basis in the Italian rapier systems of Ridolfo Capo Ferro, Salvator Fabris, and Nicoletto Giganti. Each of these classes builds on the previous, so please attend as many as you can manage. Also, please bring your armor for Calontir Steel if you have it. Most of the class time will be dedicated to focused drills. The tentative scheduling is that Day 1 and 2 will focus on forming a good guard and the lunge. Days 3 and 4 will focus on basic defenses. Days 5 and 6 will focus on counters to those defenses, and days 7 and 8 will be used to put it all together.

Time: 3pm – 5pm Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
Location: Near the Calontir Steel List
Instructor: Lord Gawin Kappler (MKA Joe Shaffer)

Fiore’s Dagger Plays

This class will work through the dagger plays of Fiore de Liberi. We will discuss basic defenses against dagger strikes and basic grappling in response to those strikes.

Time: 10am – 11am Wednesday
Location: Near the Calontir Steel List
Instructor: Lord Gawin Kappler (MKA Joe Shaffer)

How to prepare for a Duel in 30 days or less

This class will provide a very basic introduction to how to prepare for a fencing duel in 30 days or less. If you are looking to find a simple introduction to how to defend yourself with a sword, this class is for you.

Time: 10am – 11am Monday
Location: Near the Calontir Steel List
Instructor: Lord Gawin Kappler (MKA Joe Shaffer)

Using a Dagger in Italian Rapier

This class will emphasize the use of a dagger in Italian Rapier fencing. Please bring your sword and dagger if you have one.

Time: 10am – 11am Thursday
Location: Near the Calontir Steel List
Instructor: Lord Gawin Kappler (MKA Joe Shaffer)

Company of Travelers’ Information

From the Lilies War website:

Greetings all

Here is the information if you are curious about camping with the Company of Travelers.

The Company of Travelers once again invites anyone interested a more medieval atmosphere to camp with us. We are an informal Calontir group supporting attempts to be more medieval in any aspect, ranging from accoutrement to persona interaction. The camping area is intended to enhance the medieval experience by keeping blatantly modern things out of sight.

The guidelines are pretty simple:

1. To protect the medieval visual aspect, cars are allowed in for set up/tear down only between the hours of 9 am to 10 am and 3 pm to 4 pm from Sunday through Thursday.

2. All modern things should be kept out of the general view. Tents, furniture, and other large equipment should be of a period nature. No modern tents or shade flies as well as any other blatantly modern items please.

3. Due to several people with severe allergic reactions, we ask that this be kept a non-smoking area.

This is certainly not the only period encampment at Lilies War, but if you want to try it, please join us!

Call for Cut & Thrust Marshals for Lilies War

I know it seems like a long way off, but Lilies is only a little over 9 weeks away!

We have tournaments scheduled for Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings at 10 am. We have our traditional open field time from 1pm to 3pm every day. And we need C&T marshals for each of these. The Ladies of the Rose Tournament is on Thursday, and will likely need the most marshals. I could also use a drop-dead deputy.

Please contact me at rex.deaver at gmail dot com if you would be willing to schedule any of these times.

Sweets for the Sweet X Brewing Competition at Lilies!

Hello Calontir!

I’d like to announce the return of:

Sweets for the Sweet!

TEN YEARS of sweet, syrupy alcohol just isn’t enough for the sweet ladies of Calontir!

Once again, the collected brewers of the Knowne World have the opportunity to win the hearts (and palates) of the lovely ladies who compare stout to motor oil, porter to swamp muck, and dry wine to harsh vinegar. Too long have these poor ladies sat in miserable sobriety! This must be cured!

All sweet alcohols are eligible — cider, wine, mead, beer, even cordials and liqueurs. (As usual, cordials and liqueurs should be based on a neutral store-bought spirit.) Any beverage you have personally produced may be entered.

Judging will be by a panel of sweet ladies of Calontir, with at least one experienced brewer for the more technical aspects. The judges will be looking for the following, in order:

1. Taste. Aim for the sweet spot.
2. Period ingredients.
3. Period brewing techniques.

Minimum documentation: an ingredient list, in case of allergies among the judges. More documentation is always better.

The competition is tentatively scheduled for the second Saturday, check the Lilies schedule for the definite time.

Please help me carry on this wonderful tradition, and help some sweet ladies get sweeter!

Thanks!

Blank Borders Scribal Competition at Lilies

Hello Scribes!

Always wanted to help out the Kingdom by painting a GoA, but didn’t want to deal with a tight deadline? Well this is the competition for you!
Create a blank border for an award scroll in which text can be inserted later. Here are the parameters:
  • Must leave a space for text no smaller than 7”x10” in and at least 1/4″ in edge margins.
  • Must include a space/circle for the award (if you would like it to go for a specific award, which might help you tailor your illuminations, you may paint it in).
  • (Optional) A space for the device of the person receiving the award, so it can be personalized.
At the end of the competition all entries will be given to the Crown as largess, so make sure to take pictures/scan your Blank Borders before you go to war! These borders help TRM out by being on hand when they want to award a Grant on short notice, which also keeps the pressure off the scribes.
Judging will be based upon Kingdom Criteria for illumination (to be found on the A&S website), and basic documentation (3”x5” card) is required, but more documentation is always better! (If you cannot be at war on competition day, but would still like to enter, your border may be delivered by someone else in your stead.)
The competition is tentatively scheduled for the Second Saturday morning. Please check your Lilies schedule for the definite time and location.
Please help TRM and enter your Blank Borders!

Lilies Samra call for performers

Greetings Kingdom of Calontir! It is with pleasure that I announce the Middle Eastern Samra to be held on the first Saturday of Lilies war at Sunset on the beach. Taking a page from al-Mahala, Cecelia and I are inviting Musicians and dancers to participate in Period Performances from all Middle Eastern cultures portrayed in the SCA. Please message or email me (December Montecino) decembermontecino@gmail.com if you are interested in performing as a musician or as a dancer. We plan on interspersing performances with free dance.

What is a Samra you ask? “’Samra’ in Arabic means a spontaneous celebration of dance and music. Originally the Arabic term ‘Samra’ was used to describe the noises made by the sounds of lively crowds and certain musical instruments, such as in a party or celebration.”

Thank you!
