Announcement: New Social Media Committee

Greetings,

The Board of Directors, in direct response to the increasing issues of Social Media, has decided to form a Social Media Committee to discuss and address the following:

  • Clearly defined scope of review for SCA Social Media.
  • Established Social Media bright-lines* for what constitutes unacceptable social media behavior.
  • Corrective action guidelines for Crowns and Seneschals to administer proportional corrective actions for transgressions against the aforementioned bright-lines.
  • Suggested training program for social media officers, seneschals, and crowns on how to identify bright-line transgressions as they occur, when and how to lock threads, turn off comments, and/or delete posts.
  • A strict definition of doxxing.

We wish to assure our community that the SCA is committed to being a non-political entity and inclusive of all beliefs and people.

The President and Society Seneschal will be reaching out to kingdoms soon to gather input on Social Media.

*Merriam Webster defines a bright-line as – providing an unambiguous criterion or guideline especially in law*

Announcement: Statement from the Laurel Queen of Arms on Offensive Names and the Current Situation

The Bavarian Herald Jörg Rügen around 1510. Public Domain in the US

From Juliana de Luna, Laurel Queen of Arms, greetings to all those to whom these presents come.

Offensive Names and the Current Situation

As you doubtless know, a great deal of concern has been expressed about the fact that Wolfgang von Sachsenhausen, a name registered in 2007, included reference both to a Nazi concentration camp and a scientist who did experiments there.  We wish to share with you, so that you can share with your populace, an explanation of how this name was registered and a general road map of what the Laurel Office has been working on since we became aware of the issue in the morning of Saturday, June 6, 2020.

How this name was registered:

The Standards for Evaluation of Names and Armory (“SENA”) ban the registration of names that are offensive.  Specifically:

No name that is offensive to a large segment of members of the SCA or the general public will be registered. Offense is a modern concept; just because a name was used in period does not mean that it is not offensive to the modern observer. Offense returns are rare because the bar for determining offensiveness is quite high; it has not been unusual for years to pass between returns for offense.

Offense is not dependent on intent. The fact that a submitter did not intend to be offensive is not relevant. The standard is whether a large segment of the SCA or the general public would be offended.

In 2007, we were not as attuned to the problems of white supremacy in the SCA as we are today.  At that time, we used a different set of rules, but the rules about offensiveness were substantially the same.

The people making decisions on names and armory are not experts in every topic that arises.  For that reason, we rely heavily on commentary from our array of volunteer heralds from every Kingdom.  In this particular case, no one at the Society level identified the link between this name and the concentration camp in commentary, so the issue was not considered at the time.  I was a commenter at that time and can say that we rarely looked actively for such issues, assuming that submissions of hate were a thing of the past.

Now, in 2020, we are more alert to the problems of white supremacy and racism in the Society, as are our commenters.  In addition, there is vastly more information available to allow us to identify potentially problematic names.  We make a regular practice of checking Google and other available resources, such as the databases of white supremacist images and lists of offensive racial terminology, when making decisions.  Offensive racial epithets such as the Gypsy have been banned, as have certain depictions of the Celtic or Norse crosses that are commonly used by hate groups.

What has the Laurel Office been doing?

Since becoming aware of the issue, the Laurel Office has been working on several projects:

(1)  We have prepared a report to the Board of Directors discussing the issue, our plans for moving forward, and the calls for revocation of this person’s registration (something that is regulated by Corpora rather than the Laurel office).

(2)  We have prepared and will shortly be issuing a Palimpsest Letter for commentary adding a provision to SENA banning names that are morally offensive and proposing a multi-factor test for moral offensiveness.

(3)  We have researched and prepared a proposal for how to handle names that incorporate place names of concentration camps, which will appear in an upcoming Cover Letter.

(4)  On the April 2020 Cover Letter, we will be announcing a new policy allowing free changes of names and armory for people whose registered elements are offensive.  For example, some period armorial motifs have been co-opted by hate groups in the years since they were originally registered.  Likewise, the phrase the Gypsy once had a very different popular meaning, but is now considered hate speech by the Roma people and the United Nations.  People who now find themselves with inadvertently offensive names may wish to change them and we are removing one barrier to doing so.

(5)  Pelican Queen of Arms is forming a working group to identify other potential red flags in names so that we can maintain a list of problematic name elements going forward.  Although Pelican and her staff have been doing this same work behind the scenes for several years, we now are actively reaching out to people who are not presently commenting to request their assistance.

What can people do?

(1)  Be patient.  Many of the things we are trying to do require substantial research time or input from the Board of Directors.

(2)  Become involved in researching and commenting on names and armory in OSCAR.  The Sovereigns are not experts in every single area of language, history or armory.  We need and rely on commentary from experts in a wide variety of fields.  We remain particularly in need of people with expertise in languages and cultures outside of Europe.

(3)  Become involved in researching and writing articles to help educate people on period names or armorial motifs that have problematic modern connotations.

Collected from Facebook:

As so many of us struggle with the pain of separation from one another socially, so too do we struggle with the realities of systemic inequality and racism in our society. In the United States and around the world, the recent senseless killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and too many before them have unleashed an avalanche of pent-up emotion.

Our Core Values, which guide us in even these darkest of times, include the following tenets: to “act in accordance with the chivalric virtues of honor and service”, to “value and respect the worth and dignity of all individuals”, and to “practice inclusiveness and respect pluralism and diversity”.

If we are to live by our core values then there is only one path forward: we must both fight against systemic injustice and support those that do.

As the unique educational organization that we are, we have the opportunity to leverage our greatest resource: our community.

It is our community that makes us who we are. That is the true value of the Society for Creative Anachronism. We treasure the rich diversity of our community as a reflection of the rich diversity of history and we owe it to ourselves to deepen our understanding of pervasive inequitable treatment so that we can move forward on a journey of healing.

There is a tremendous amount of work to be done. It is time for us to take a hard look at who we are in order to hold ourselves accountable for the actions we take – and the actions we don’t take.

There is also fear. Our current reality is the direct result of generations of discrimination and collective trauma. As we educate ourselves to best support every member of our community, we must acknowledge the fear – and speak regardless. The time for inaction is over.

Every member of the SCA can effect positive change through personal accountability. Educate yourself and those around you on issues of injustice. Speak out against it when you see it, and use any platform that you have to elevate other voices speaking out against it, particularly those voices of marginalized groups. Assist those causes which seek to address discrimination, racial inequity, and all systemic injustice through the resources that you have available to you.

I invite all members of the SCA to continue to think about further ways they can help strengthen our commitment to our Core Values.

My SCA stands against bigotry. My SCA will not be silent, and therefore complicit, in the face of injustice. I will continue to work to make my SCA a haven for all, and a key player for progress in the battle against inequality through education and community.

It is my most ardent hope that you will join me.

Announcement: From TRM, In Person Events for the Month of June Canceled

Gleaned from Facebook:

Heartlanders,

First, We want to thank all of you, again, who have taken it upon yourselves to see that the not only the business of the SCA continues, but that the dream remains alive and well. The local group meetings, classes, singing, and round tables on fighting and the virtues have been wonderful. If we take anything away from our relative isolation We would love to see these kinds of open discussions, comradery, and self-enrichment continue for all.

Mid-May has come, and we owe you some answers. Thank you for your patience as we have consulted with our Baronages, advisors, and State and CDC guidelines to bring you news for June. Each of the states comprising Calontir has provided different guidance about resuming normal industry and recommendations on the size limit of gatherings. If you have not already, We encourage you to seek out those recommendations for your municipalities, familiarize yourselves with them, and continue to make the choices that are safest for you and your families.

Hopefully you will understand that, given the nature of our Society, travel between groups is ingrained in our culture, and We must make a choice for the whole of Calontir. Between that and the guidelines currently limiting gathering sizes,

We will be continuing the suspension all official SCA in person activities through the month of June.

We have already been in contact with the Witan and are in the very beginning stages of planning an online Calon-Con. If you are a reporting deputy within one of the Kingdom Offices with resources for hosting online meetings and you are willing to help, please reach up through your reporting structure.

Her Majesty, the Kingdom Seneschal, and I have been in contact with the Society to obtain variances allowing us to host Crown Tournament on a first feasible date basis. There will be much more information to come when it is available.

Your continued and constant fortitude has been astounding. The weight of waiting would have broken a lesser people. Constancy will see us through, but here I must remind myself of Marcus Aurelius, “Be tolerant with others and strict with yourself”. Set the example you wish to see in others.

Lilies, Crown Tournament, and Coronation Postponed

Below is the complete text of TRMs posting to the Kingdom Facebook page. Main highlights are:

  • Lilies is postponed. Event stewards and staff are working on plans for a scaled down version in the fall.
  • Crown Tournament is postponed to a future date, when it can be safely held.
  • Coronation will be postponed, with the intent of giving future heirs at least a month before elevation
  • No plans to hold virtual courts

Good evening Calontir!

First, we appreciate everyone who attended our Q&A session this evening. Your concern for your fellow Calontiri heartens us. For those of you unable to attend, we know that it was short notice, but hopefully this message will cover most of the high points for you. Many of you have, until now, had a lot of unasked questions and uncertainty. We hope that this has helped alleviate those fears.

Along those lines, while we all labor with the uncertainty of the pandemic it has been Our task to keep Kingdom morale high, and to do our best to help you meet those needs from our home. Using that as a metric, last week we failed you. We apologize to you all for that and we will strive to do better. Further, if you find yourselves unhappy with the SCA, the Kingdom, or the management of your local groups under our restrictions we accept that blame as well. Please direct that ire where it belongs – on us.

Here is a very brief summary of the announcements we made this evening

-In light of the most recent health guidelines and information released by both Missouri and Iowa on Monday 4/27, We are postponing Lilies. The event stewards and staff are working hard on plans for a scaled down Lilies in the fall, and details on that will be released as they are available. While we will all miss our usual Summer, His Majesty and I are looking forward to this and greatly appreciate the efforts of everyone working to still give us that Lilies experience a little further down the road. We cannot thank them enough for time they have given and the dedication they have shown to the Kingdom.

-Because of this postponement, Our Crown Tournament is also postponed. Our current intent is to hold it as soon as it is safely possible, and We will be investigating options for that. We are working with the Society to obtain variances for several possibilities. We thank them for their willingness to work us to see that our Customs and Traditions are preserved.

-As far as other June activities are concerned, We will be maintaining our previously stated method of making decisions on a month-by-month basis and will be evaluating the possibility of smaller events, meetings, and practices for June in mid-May. We want to thank the Barons and Seneschals and Kingdom Reeve for their continued patience and support.

-With Crown Tourney postponed to an uncertain future date, Coronation must be as well. We hope to have heirs as soon as we can safely do so, and to give them at least a month to enjoy being heirs and to organize for their own reign and the continued betterment of all Calontir.

-All of these postponements lead to the necessity of seeking a variance for the extension of our own reign. We had hoped to avoid this deviation from tradition, but it has been made unavoidable by the current circumstances. We will be working to find the best possible solutions for finding our heirs to follow us in maintaining Calontir and hope that We have your patience and understanding while We do so.

The following are some additional notes based on your questions and comments:

-Please do keep the business of the SCA as active as you can – planning events, seeing to the local books, and reports. We do not know what the future time tables will be for events, and we understand that some details may be hard to pin down with not all businesses and site locations open, but if we are not planning for upcoming events now, there will be nothing to attend when the time comes and we are able to be together again.

-We do not have any plans for Virtual Courts. Those that have happened in other Kingdoms have mostly been due to the necessity of having heirs step up. The business we have outstanding, elevations specifically deserve more than an electronic thank you.

-Many had kind words for us on the reign so far and we wanted to acknowledge our entire royal household, and specifically Mistress Jorunn and Mistress Gabby for the incredible amount of effort that they have put in behind the scenes keeping us organized and making us look good. Similarly, Mistress Rochwen has been instrumental in organizing and creating the beautiful scrolls for awards that we have given and many that we have yet to give. They all deserve more thanks than we can possibly express.

These times are difficult for everyone. We know that you feel strained, patience is tried, tempers are short, and fear whispers to you. We know what to do and we know how to do it, but to stare unwavering at uncertainty is eventually bound to shake even the most dauntless.

Pick your friends and siblings up. Help them stand strong so that they may do so for you in turn. Hold Fast Calontir.

Until death take Us, The world end, or Our rightful heir take this burden from Us.

From Their Royal Majesties: ZOOM Populace Discussion of Current State of the Kingdom

This information is gleaned from a Facebook event page, and edited to apply to those not on Facebook:

We know that many of you have questions about the current state of things within the kingdom and, rather than continued guesses and speculation, We invite you to join Us for a Calontir Q&A via Zoom on Tuesday 4/28 from 7:30 to 8:30pm.

This is not an SCA event or a court – just a way for us to try to address at one time all who have questions or are interested in hearing those of others. We will not be able to answer every single question that you have, because some things We just don’t have answers to, but We will do our best to pass on to you any information and assuage any fears that We can…

To prevent chaos and confusion, we will be muting all participants at the beginning of the call and unmuting one at a time to allow them to ask their questions. If you would like to speak, please use the raise hand function and we will do our best to answer questions in the order they come up. You can also use the chat window to ask questions, if you prefer.

If you have questions that you want to be sure We answer or that may require Us to do a little digging before hand, please feel free to post them on here, so that We can have the chance to get the information you are looking for.

We hope to see all interested members of the populace on Tuesday evening and look forward to hopefully putting your minds at ease.

Lucian and Tamar
