Conna Ingen Ui Chearbhaill — Beginners Ball (aka, the Hanne/Conna Ball)

Saturday, June 14, 2 pm, at the Permanent Shelter at Lilies War.

Something fun for first full day of Lilies! The Beginners Ball will get us off on the right foot. We will focus on only eight tunes for this mini-ball that’s perfect for beginners or for those who may be nervous about playing in a ball setting. No worries here! Just lots of laid-back fun! Come play music in a setting that’s stress-free! Contact Conna if you need sheet music.

Conna Ingen Ui Chearbhaill — Pilgrimage at Lilies War!

Wednesday, June 18, 3 pm, beginning near the eastern corner of the Old Battlefield.

Walk the pilgrimage route on the Lilies site while singing or playing a Cantiga de Santa Maria. This year’s Cantiga will be the Miracle of the Dancing Porkchop. Words for singers will be in English this year, to help with ease of participation. Musicians are encouraged to memorize the tune and play as we walk. We will begin the pilgrimage from the eastern corner of the old battlefield (near Fernando’s camp), and we will work our way around Lilies site, ending at the Broken Harp.

Come and be a part of a medieval pilgrimage! Send me a note if you’d like the sheet music.

Johanne of Fishergate — Narrow Wares Competition at Lilies

Greetings all fiber enthusiasts!

On Friday at Lilies, at 9:00 a.m. in the Tailors Tent, there will be a narrow wares competition. A prize will be offered, by the Honorable Lady Johanne of Fisher Gate, in each of three categories.

1) One for cords: this includes lucet, Kumihimo, finger loop braiding, ply-split braiding, sling cords or any other cord you can document to period.

2) One for band weaving: the patterned narrow bands we call inkle, that we do in the SCA, are not documented in period in Europe, though patterned narrow bands were done in other parts of the world. That being said, they are quite beautiful and we make and use them. All types of narrow bands, including inkle, are welcome. This includes simple patterned bands, pick-up patterns, sprang, pebble weaves, ply-split braiding, ribbons or any other narrow band. Kumihimo bands done on a Takadai are included.

3) One for tablet weaving: this includes modern SCA heraldic bands, double face patterns, brocade, Egyptian diagonals (broad diagonals, double turn), Snartemo or any other band you can document to period or that is SCA specific.

Minimal documentation would be appreciated. A handwritten 3″x5″ card with who, what, when, where, how, will do.

Falcon Banner Reporting from Lilies War

We will be reporting very sporadically from Lilies War, as we see cool stuff happen. Expect highlights from Court, occasional photos, and the like. Some photos may or may not be published, depending on the extent of the bribes offered. If we don’t cover something about you, don’t think it is because we have anything against you. It is just that we were too busy having fun doing something else.

May you have an enjoyable War, and may we all meet back here safely when it is over.

Thora Sigurdsdottir — Volunteers needed at A&S table Saturday

Greetings Calontir,

Lilies War is fast approaching. I am need of volunteers to help at the A&S table Saturday – Saturday 9 am-5 pm. I will have 2 hour shifts setup and really would appreciate anyone that can help to let me know. I have a couple of classes that I am teaching and really need someone to man the table. Basically you answer questions like where is a specific tent, and to hand out packets to teachers and take back the completed packets. You can work on your projects while you are there.

Please send me a message as to when you will be able to help out.

Don’t make me beg. It isn’t pretty with this old lady on her knees begging, especially since I can’t get back off the ground.

I hope to see all or as many of you in the A&S area taking classes or teaching.

In Service to a dream,
Mistress Thora Sigurdsdottir

Champagne Players Celebration at Lilies

Good people of Calontir and all welcome visitors to the War of the Lillies! Over the past years, the Champagne Players have delighted to entertain you with our shows.

This year, we have elected to take a break to rejuvenate our creative muses, and we intend to reignite the flame of ridicule anon!

We humbly thank you for your patronage, and invite you to join us in celebration for our efforts on Monday night after dark, at the Permanent Pavilion located at the end of the Long March Road, on the East side of camp. Note: the schedule currently says 3 Rivers Players. Talk about your scene stealing…

We offer drink to quench your thirst, both adult and juvenile (as our humor). If you plan to partake of our adult beverages, please BRING YOUR IDs. A representative will be able to check and mark you with our super-secret glyph so you may continue to partake without hassle. No one shall receive adult beverages without this mark.

We shall have food! Our favorite furniture-depicteur, Martin Vulliet, will have delictable treats for consumption!
We offer gaming tables to test your luck and skill! Have nothing to bet? Lady Coquette of Northshield has graciously made starter bundles of baubles to get you started on your campaign of winning everyone else’s stuff!

We shall also hopefully have music to listen and dance to – drummers, please join us!
Should you have any further questions, please ask me, Lord Logan Munro, aka the guy in charge of waking you with news this week!

A poem for warriors of Calontir

Master Murdoch writes:

From the city of Kiev,
From the village of Vyshgorod,
Came a strong hearted Dama.
She broke fast on the road,
For she wished to arrive in time for the tourney on the shores of the Lake of the Lilies.

Near the shire of Loch Bheathrach,
Stout bogatyr had assembled.
No one called them to battle.
No one sounded the horn of war.
No one stood before them with banner raised.

Iliyana of the Rose spoke to them.
“Hail to you, bogatyr of the Falcon.
In the 10th year of the Falcon’s flight,
I did reign.
In the twenty-second year of war in the debateable lands,
I did reign
In the first year of the Prize of the Queen,
I did reign.”

The bogatyr saw that none stood under her trident banner.
Waves did not crash thunderously on the shore.
Birds did not fill the wind with song.
The bogatyr spoke as one.
“Hail to you, Iliya Sergeivna Roskochnnikova,
We lend our axe.
We lend our spear.
We lend our sword.”

Against all who stood opposed,
The bogatyr fought with ferocity.
The bogatyr fought with honor.

Knyaginya Iliya spoke to the bogatyr.
“Hail to you, Calon bogatyr.
You have proven your skill.
You have proven your honor.
Let your names be sung in Bylinas,
along with Alyosha Popovich, Dobrynya Nikitich, and Ilya Muromets”

Dama—a noble Lady
Bogatyr—a Rus epic hero
Knyaginya—a countess

Her Excellency Iliya is in need of fighter for the Lady of the Rose Tournaments at Lilies. She requires a cut & thrust fighter, and both a belted and unbelted heavy weapons fighter. Those who would answer her call, please contact me, Murdoch via email at murdochst@msn.com or stop by our camp on Outlands point at Lilies.

Please repost as appropriate.

Chivalry Social at Lilies

Chivalry Social
Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!

Do you ever ask yourself…

  • How does he throw that shot?
  • How can I get more spear kills?
  • Why do I keep getting hit in the ____?
  • How I can I fight, win and act in an honorable and chivalric manner?

When : Sunday June 15

  • 10:30 (following morning court) One on one instruction with the knights of the known world
  • 12:30 Broken field battle, practical application of skills learned, unlimited res. No weapons restriction. Instructional field stays open for the duration

Who: Fighters of ALL skill levels

Where: battle field

On the first Sunday the Order of the Chivalry is dedicating themselves to helping you improve your fighting. Starting with one-on-one instruction, you can train the skill of your choice with the Chiv of your choice. Follow that up with some direct application in an unlimited resurrection battle, or keep participating in one-on-one training.

It’s your call on what you want. Looking for some pointers on your stance? Want some help with other parts of your fighting? Or do you want to go a few rounds of “A-Game” with Duke Speedy McThunderStick? Do you just want to wait a bit and jump in the unlimited resurrection battle and bash around with your friends? The chivalry will stay out there as long as someone wants to keep fighting and learning!
