Last Call for Submissions to The Calon Scrolls

Last call for submissions for the spring issue of The Calon Scrolls. The deadline is Jan. 20.

The Scrolls is our kingdom’s arts and sciences magazine. The link to the publication is http://calonscrolls.calontir.org/

Some of you may have noticed that The Scrolls hasn’t been published for a year. That is because I have only received one submission in that time.
So PLEASE, if you have an article, book or movie review or done documentation about an SCA-related topic, please submit it to the Scrolls.
Any submissions that would be of interest to SCA members are welcome. SCA related art and imagery is also appreciated.

I would really like to get back to a quarterly publication schedule for The Scrolls, but I can only do that if I have content.

Calontir Fyrd and MAA Behourd

Fighters, Archers, Equestrians, I am pleased to announce the Calontir Fyrd and Man at Arms (MAA) Behourd. This season long tourney will run from Chieftains 2015 to Toys for Tots 2015. There will be two different booklets, one for the Fyrd and one for the MAA. Fyrd, your part of the tournament is to challenge as many different MAA as possible. MAA, your part is to challenge as many different Fyrd as possible. Challenges may happen at any event, fighter practice, or gathering but you only get one point per person challenged.

You may be asking, what if I’m a Fyrd in one discipline but a MAA in another and want to keep my challenges separate?  You can pick up one of each. But, what if I’m a Fyrd/MAA in multiple disciplines or the MAA/Fyrd I want to fight is in multiple disciplines or I just don’t want two booklets?  There will be a portion of each booklet that is marked for Cross Discipline Challenges. The booklets will be large enough to make short notes about the challenges.

Starting with Winter War Maneuvers you can pick up your booklet(s) from me, Nakos Theodorosides, at any event I’m at. At Winter War Maneuvers I will have 200 of each for Fyrd and MAA to take extras back to their groups. If you have any questions please contact me on Facebook or by email.

The intent of this behourd is to promote Fyrd and MAA to mingle and get to know each other better and to pass knowledge on. Oh and remember, once a Fyrd always a Fyrd.

Online Bird of Prey – 3rd Iteration Launch and Call for Submissions

A new year and a new reign has begun. A new season of war is upon us. With this, I am proud to announce a return of the Calontir Bird of Prey.

The Calontir Bird of Prey is a journal for and by the fighters of Calontir. With the permission of the previous editors, Sir Kirk and Sir Halvgrim, I have sought to bring the Bird of Prey back. Over the next two weeks the articles appearing in the “Classic” Online volumes will be appearing on a new website :

The Bird of Prey is not an archival repository, but a continuing journal of the way we fight, the way we train, and why. For this, I ask for anyone who wishes to contribute an article or ideas to step forward to bring this wonderful resource into a third decade.

What kinds of articles are desirous?
-Battle reports.
-Tactics and Theory Articles.
-Training Drills.
-Application of Chivalry and recounts of prowess in our Current Middle Ages.
-Weapon and armor construction.
-Calontir Martial History.

A truly new feature I intend to exploit given modern means is to create training videos that will allow basic drills to be recorded and distributed to expand our ability to train Their Majesties armies to standard.

Anyone with the interest and will can write an article for the Bird of Prey. Every experience shared adds to our whole understanding. Being a wordpress blog, there will be no specific release schedule for new “issues,” but instead allow a constantly evolving and expanding body of knowledge. The request for new submissions is open now.

This is our first post from the new hosting site. We wanted to test all the functions, as well as to help all of our readers a bit more with the transition.

First, the falconbanner.com  domain name has not been transferred yet and it may take a few days for that to happen. In the meantime, you will always be able to find us at

Second, if you were following us by email or through WordPress.com, we were not able to transfer those connections. Please subscribe at the new site. There is a new Subscribe tab on the main menu, or you can use the widget below.

A Labor of Love: Heraldic, Scribal, and Dance Symposium

Join us this Valentine’s for a wonderful day full of heraldry, dancing, and the scribal arts, followed by an evening ball – the perfect way to end this day of romance.

The event will take place in Baldwin Hall during the day, then move across campus for the ball.

Gate opens at 8:00 and will stay open at noon, and our first classes will begin at 9:00.

Site fee is 5.00 for adults and 3.00 for children under 18. 5.00 dollar non-member surcharge.

There will be no inn this year, but light refreshments will be available throughout the day for a suggested donation and a map of local eateries will be provided.

18th Annual Bobbin & Weaving, 2015

February Friday 13th, (after work hours), Saturday 14th, & Sunday 15th

‘Aine nic Taillieur’s Manor

It’s that time of year again. Because Clothiers falls later in the month this year, Bobbin & Weaving will also fall later. After we scheduled, Heraldic, Scribal & Dance scheduled for the same weekend. We understand many of you will have plans for Valentine’s Day and HS&D (I usually attend) but I hope to see some of you for B&W. We will miss those of you who can’t make it due to these conflicts. 

Bring your latest project and join us for a weekend of fun and camaraderie. A number of people have offered to teach just about anything you might like to learn, such as bobbin lace, kumihimo, tablet weaving, pick-up inkle weaving, netting, spinning, needle felting, felting, knitting, nalbinding, sprang, bookbinding, etc. We don’t normally schedule formal classes but contact me johannefishergate@gmail.com ahead of time so I can let people know if you want a particular class or for info on supplies you might need. Also contact me if there is something YOU would like to teach so I can let people know. ‘Aine has a huge sewing/craft room, so if you would like to bring your sewing machine and work on garb, there will be space. As people contact me with things they would like to learn, or to teach, I will be sending out updates.

We have a wonderful time sharing, visiting and getting to know each other better. If you do anything involving string or fiber in any form, this is the place for you. Lasair will have her merchant booth set up with a wealth of fiber goodies.

Friday night we, visit and settle in. Saturday will be spent visiting and working on projects or swimming . . . yes, swimming. ‘Aine has an indoor pool, so bring your suits and towels. There is also an elevator for those of us who are stair challenged. We will have a pot luck Saturday evening, and more work and visiting. Sunday we usually make a run to Yarn Barn and have lunch in Lawrence, KS. You are welcome to come all weekend or just one day.

There are ample kitchen facilities and refrigeration. Bring your own snacks and drinks and something for the potluck on Saturday. We never coordinate it and it is always exceptional.

This part doesn’t apply to day trippers. There is space for sleeping but, due to fire codes, the space will be a bit more limited than in the past on a first reply, first serve basis. However, Lasair has offered to provide crash space for the overflow. Many of you have been to Lasair’s house. We held Bobbin & Weaving there for three years after it outgrew my house. When requesting sleeping space, please copy me (johannefishergate@gmail.com) AND ‘Aine (bobbinlacebunny@yahoo.com) so we can stay coordinated. 

Unfortunately, a number of movies were misplaced the last few years and never showed up again, so the theater will not be open. Those of you who usually plan to sleep there will not be able to. I will send out a list of the people who have already replied to either ‘Aine or myself. Please respond if your plans have changed or if we somehow missed you. Some of us will be bunking in the huge, heated garage. Whichever place you sleep, you will need to bring your own sleeping gear. There are also motels close by. If anyone wants motel info, please let me know.

There will be plenty of table space and chairs, but if you want to be assured of comfort, bring your favorite portable chair.

For those of you with allergies, there are no indoor animals (unless you count the occasional bunnies who come as guests). If I have forgotten anything, which isn’t uncommon these days, just contact me.
