In Memoriam – Demetrios il Condottiero

Demetrios Misthophoros (aka Demetrios il Condottiero aka Dr. Henry Marks) passed away on Monday
in the Kingdom of An Tir where he had resided since his retirement.

Demetrios was a Master of the Laurel. He was one of the founders and
first Guild Master of the Calontir Cooks Guild. He is probably best
known for loving a good discussion and the wearing of “earth tones.”.
He loved to challenge folks to do better research, to be a better
person. He wanted to know the why as well as the how it was done in
medieval times. He was well traveled – having been to Greece and the
Galapagos Islands (just two of the places that I can remember hearing
about.)

When in Calontir he lived in the Barony of Vatavia, but was claimed as
a member by the Barony of Mag Mor.

Mundanely, he was a director of a treatment facility until he retired.
At which time he moved to An Tir and began writing and publishing
several books. His best known book (now out of print) was Byzantine
Cuisine.

May his journey to the afterlife be filled with joy and bounty

Youth Fundraiser at Horse and Falcon, Donations for Lilies War

First, thank you to everyone who participated in the Youth Fundraiser at Horse and Falcon. Monies were raised and will be used for Youth and Teen activities!

Second for those who promised to help or provide supplies for Lilies Youth and Teen activities– thank you. We cannot provide meaningful activities without your support!

Third, for those who would like to contribute and are unsure how to help, here are some suggestions:

  • Packages of cookies.
  • Sturdy shoe boxes or photo boxes.
  • Packages of hot dogs, bags of chips, 2 liter bottles of pop, containers of Gatorade, or packages of glow sticks.

If you could purchase and donate one or two of these items and let us know prior to Lilies that it will be there then we can spend the money raised on other supplies. Drop your donations off at the Youth Tent, and please include a little note.

Please understand that all gestures of support are appreciated, and with everyone helping it does not burden any one person.

Thank you on behalf of the youth and teens!

From Laurel Staff: Silent Heraldry Deputy chosen

Posted on Facebook:

The Laurel, Wreath, and Pelican Sovereigns of Arms, in combination with Clarion Herald, have reviewed the applications for the recently created position, Silent Herald Deputy. We received applications from several highly qualified candidates, making this a difficult decision.

We would like to thank all those who applied – though we could only choose one candidate, we are pleased to see such a strong pool of heralds dedicated to furthering silent heraldry in the SCA. After careful consideration, we have chosen Nesscia inghean Chearnaigh to take on this job.

We will be working with Nesscia to get her established in this role, and we know she will be asking for help from silent heralds around the known world to work on integrating silent heraldry to become more of a part of the SCA. Please welcome her in this (very) new office.

A&S Competition at Horse and Falcon

Greetings Calontir,
Just a reminder of the A and S competition at Horse and Falcon’s this weekend. Can’t wait to see the entries.

Camping season, and Liliies War, is fast approaching.
To celebrate authenticity in our campsites, at Horse and Falcon, the Barony of Forgotten Sea will sponsor an Arts and Science competition with the theme of “Period” Encampment. Any item used to increase the Medieval authenticity of your encampment is eligible for the competition. This could include “period” tents, furniture, lighting, cooking facilities, etc. Big or small, if the items improves the “period” nature of your encampment, please enter it.

Two prizes will be awarded – one for populace vote and one for Judges Choice.

Documentation is required, and should include a simple explanation of what the item is and how it is used in your encampment. Documentation should also include the time period and region your item is from.

YIS,

Lady Cecilia de Gatisbury
Barony of Forgotten Sea Minister of Arts and Sciences

Hobby Horse Races and Games at the Grand Tournament of Horse & Falcon

Oyez Oyez! Greetings, to the Good Gentles of Calontir and Friendly Visiting Neighbors!

This Sunday Evening, at the Grand Tournament of Horse & Falcon, there will be Hobby Horse Races and Games! Oh My! So come join us at the (area to be determined, probably Equestrian Arena) for this fundraiser for the Calontir Ministry of Youth. Funds raised will support such things as Lilies Youth Activities, the Teen Tent, and More! Come out and support our youth by donating for a chance to ride a noble steed (of the felt persuasion), sponsor a rider to ride in your honor, or just to support our Youth! We will play at the games that you shall see earlier that day, based upon medieval training techniques for equestrians. There will be a Grand Hobby Horse Processional through camp before the start of the activities, so if you’d like to claim a steed, be sure to find me earlier that day (I’ll likely be near or in the equestrian arena all day.) There will even be SNACKS (additional snack donations welcome). So come out for a night full of fun, excitement, and PONIES!
ALL Donations will be for the Calontir MOY.

Full Disclosure: Grand Procession idea inspired by the ever glorious Ealdormere cavalry seen at this past year’s Gulf War. Many thanks to Their Graces Nigel and Adrielle for always providing inspiration for shenanigans.

Second Full Disclosure: Sponsoring a rider or donating for the chance to ‘ride’ does NOT INCLUDE actual equine living and breathing steeds. These will be hobby horses of the medieval variety made of cloth and wood. Just so everyone is clear – these will be HOBBY horse games.

Third Full Disclosure: This will take the place of my normally scheduled “Youth and Equine Meet & Greet”. However, Kacey of the Flaming Hooves will still be in attendance for any youth (or adult) to meet. So be sure to come over and give his nose a friendly pat!

Ever in Service,
