Greetings unto the Populace of the SCA

In July of 2014, the SCA launched its partnership with the Amazon Smile program. This launch was worldwide and through your participation in the program, we have had some very good results.

As of our first anniversary in July 2015, the Amazon Smile program donated $2,234.89 to SCA Inc. As of our second year anniversary in July of 2016, the Amazon Smile program has donated an additional $1,746.47 to SCA Inc.

It is your participation in this partnership that has made it a success. For those of you already participating, we send you a big thank you. We appreciate your continued support of this partnership and SCA Inc.

For those who haven’t heard of the Amazon Smile program, here is the original announcement:

Many of us shop at Amazon for a wide range of products.  Did you know that the SCA can benefit from each purchase you make at no additional charge to you?

Here’s how:  Go to smile.amazon.com.  Sign into your account and a “pop up” page will appear. On the right side of the page, at the bottom is a “search” window.  Type in: Society for Creative Anachronism and click the search button.  Click on the top one and you are done.  Your donations will be automatic for any purchase within the Amazon Smile program (which is most merchandise). You can also use the following link.    http://smile.amazon.com/ch/94-1698556

Amazon donates 0.5% of each purchase to the non-profit organizations of your choice and the Society for Creative Anachronism is one of those organizations.  This is a painless way to support our organization.  These donations will be deposited quarterly from the AmazonSmile Foundation into a separate SCA corporate account dedicated for these donations.

What is the AmazonSmile Foundation?

The AmazonSmile Foundation is a 501(c)(3) private foundation created by Amazon to administer the AmazonSmile program. All donation amounts generated by the AmazonSmile program are remitted to the AmazonSmile Foundation. In turn, the AmazonSmile Foundation donates those amounts to the charitable organizations selected by our customers. Amazon pays all expenses of the AmazonSmile Foundation; they are not deducted from the donation amounts generated by purchases on AmazonSmile.

Yours in Service,

John Fulton

President, SCA Inc.

Board Committee Structure to Replace Grand Council

At its August 22, 2016 meeting the Board of Directors approved the development and implementation of an expanded Board committee structure to encourage and facilitate transparency, participation in and understanding of Society governance throughout the membership of the Society.

The Board shall establish Board committees to serve at the pleasure of the Board. Each of these committees will include representatives of the membership-at-large of the Society, to be nominated by the Kingdoms. A request for nomination process is expected to be in place for the initial committees in the 4th quarter of 2016. Committees to be established include the following:

  • Finance and Audit – Mission: assist the Board’s oversight of the Company’s accounting and financial reporting processes, the audit and integrity of the Company’s financial statements and the qualifications and independence of the Company’s independent auditor
  • Risk Management – Mission: Oversee insurance, legal, and related matters.
  • Nominating and Governance – Mission: recommend to the Board the persons to be nominated for appointment as directors; recommend to the Board the directors to be appointed to each committee of the Board; develop and recommend to the Board Society governance guidelines and policies
  • Communications – Mission: develop and oversee advertising; public relations; publications, social media and other communications initiatives of the Society
  • Membership – Mission: grow and sustain membership in the Society; evaluate and oversee implementation of programs and initiatives for membership support

The Board has also formed the following ad hoc committees to serve until their mission is completed in the discretion of the Board:

  • Youth Activities – Mission: Completion of design and implementation of YAFA programs
  • Technology – Mission: Prepare 5-year technology development plan for Society
  • Peerage – Mission:     Review proposals for the creation of new peerage

From time to time the Board may form other ad hoc committees for special projects.

The Board has the authority to dissolve or modify any committee or its membership at any time.   Committee members serve at the pleasure of the Board, subject to a 3-year term limit. Initial appointments may at the discretion of the Board be for staggered terms so that the term of all such members of a committee do not expire at the same time. Committees will make recommendations to the Board and give quarterly reports. Committee members will be appointed by the Board and Committee chairs designated by the Board.  Committee members at large will be nominated in response to a Request for Nomination (RFN) sent by the Board to each Kingdom Seneschal, describing the mission of the committee and suggested minimum qualifications for committee members.  Kingdoms may then (within a defined period of time) nominate individuals in their Kingdom.  Nominations would be made by the sitting Crown with the advice and consent of the Kingdom Seneschal.

Kingdom Youth Combat Seeking Donations

Good Gentles of the Populace:

As youth sports go, the price tag for ours is likely to make some families a bit leery of involvement, considering the ephemeral nature of children’s’ attention, and their inconvenient habit of changing size and shape. There aren’t a lot of families out there willing to plop down $150 or more on something that their child might not take to.

To that end, In an effort to engage more kids in the Calontir Youth Combat activities, I would like to respectfully ask the populace for donations, especially armor pieces (in good repair) that meet or exceed the minimum Calontir Youth Combat requirements. You can make it, buy it or dig it out of your basement if you like. As long as it is functional and looks like it will fit a child, I will happily collect it. If you’re not sure, please ask questions.

If you prefer money donations, those can be directed towards Melodia. She will use it to buy “off the shelf” items from sales outlets that meet or exceed the KYC safety standards (youth hockey helmets and gloves for example).

With a little bit of support, we will have a chance to draw in all those kids on the edges who would play were it not for legal gear.

Xandre

Crown Tournament Letters of Intent

TRM Logan & Ylva

TRM Logan & Ylva

Part of being a responsible Crown is ensuring the smooth transition from one reign to the next. To that end We are setting forth these requirements for those who would wish to compete in Our Crown list in Lonely Tower this October. Please provide your letter of intent to Us and Our seneschal by September 24th, 2016. You may present them at an event or send an electronic copy to both Falcon-Crown@calontir.org and Seneschal@calontir.org.

We encourage everyone who meets the criteria below to participate. Being Crown of Calontir does take time and effort, but the experience brings more joy than we could have imagined.  You must be willing to serve the Kingdom in this fashion, but not necessarily wishing to with all your being. Taking part in Crown Tournament is a privilege that more people should take advantage of. At no other time can you participate in the selection of your next Sovereign. And who knows, it might be you!

Our requirements for both the combatant and the consort are as follows:

  1. Per kingdom law, you must be familiar with kingdom law, and swear an oath that you are. Please read it.
  2. It is vital that the Crown be able to work together to accomplish great things. Please provide an example of some project that you have worked on together and how you managed it. It needn’t be an SCA project, just an indication that you can deal with each other in somewhat stressful situations.
  3. The Crown makes many decisions that affect the entire Kingdom. To show that you have some knowledge of the breadth and depth of Calontir, please provide a list of the events that both of you have attended (together or separately) in the last 12 months.
  4. Individually, please provide your reasoning for selecting that person to fight for/to carry your favor. What makes them special in your eyes.
  5. For Our seneschal, please provide copies of your proof of membership, which should last through the end of your potential reign. (Should your current membership end before your reign would, you will be required to renew it immediately after winning Crown Tournament)
  6. Also for Our seneschal, please provide proof of residence within Calontir for the past year, or indication that you have been “treaty-ed in” for at least that long. A driver’s license will usually provide this.

We look forward to a wonderful tournament, and hope that everyone will join Us, either on the field or not.

Seeking Deputy Lanner Herald

Reposted from the Calonlist
Greetings all

I am seeking a deputy for the position of Lanner Herald.

Many of you have no idea that this position exists, much less what it does. The Lanner Herald’s job is to help with ceremonies in Calontir. I have some time left on my warrant, but I have a project in mind and I need some help.

Calontir has a big book of ceremonies, but this big book is rarely referenced in part because few people know of it and it is not readily available. It is my desire to improve Calontir’s ceremonies by cataloging this big book and all the other ceremonies I can get my grubby little hands upon. This is not a small undertaking and I need help. What I need is someone to scan / transcribe the ceremonies so that I can electronically catalogue them.

Qualifications: An interest in ceremonies, both in the SCA and in history. Constant access to a computer, to help digitize things. A willingness and desire to organize things. Ideas for how you’d like to see things done better.

This is a long-term project. Applicants should expect that by becoming deputy, they will eventually become Lanner themselves. This project thus requires a commitment. Also, applicants should be prepared to actively reach out to those who might need ceremonies.

If you are interested, please email me at rob@kotn.org. I will be accepting applications through King’s Company of Archers.
Master Rhodri ap Hywel, Lanner Herald

Greetings unto the Known World and those going to Pennsic from Duchess Mary of Northshield!

If you were ‘going to catch them all’ at Pennsic, what would you catch?  We have the most exotic creatures all around us, we just have to look.  This year I am sponsoring a quest for young and old to ‘catch’ – SCA style.

The goal is simple – seek and find people from every stage of progression from every kingdom.  I have a form to help you keep track and if you bring that form back to the Games Tent by 8/11 you will get a prize for your efforts. Whoever caught the most/’them all’ gets a special prize.

Truly, the real prize will be the people you meet and the things you learn!

Forms can be obtained at the Games Tent, or you can print the PDF: Pennsiccatchthemall

And since we are an increasingly digital society if you feel inclined, and, it is not offensive to your ‘catch’ please post pictures with #Pennsiccatchthemall

From Her Royal Majesty Ylva, Patroness of the Arts

Another great opportunity at Pennsic! This one is for the A&S War Point, and has been offered to Calontir by TRMs Ealdormere, Nigel and Adrielle. The entrant would need to be “unwreathed” (not a Laurel), and other information is below. Please contact ME ASAP if you are interested. We want to let Them know by Friday at noon.

“Basics of the A&S War Point

When – Thursday of War Week, in the Great Hall. 9-3pm

Entrants are encouraged to arrive around 8-ish to set up- each entrant will pick a number out of a hat, which will correspond to a table space. (Approximately 3-4 feet). Artisans are encouraged to stand by their displays to interact with visitors but it is not mandatory.

Judging is by “populace choice”- any person with an A&S award given to them from a Crown (AoA, GoA, and Peerage levels) will receive 3 pony beads to vote with. Judging takes place from 9-3. From 3-4pm the votes are tallyed, and results are announced at 4.

Documentation is not required, but, because at least some of the voters are laurels, it is probably wise to provide it. The works of a specific artisan are judged as a body of work- so you could bring one mas terpiece, or several smaller pieces. Last years winners spanned the gamut- we had one single, extraordinary piece as the top winner on one side, and multiple part bodies of work win for the other side.

The Great Hall will be overseen by volunteers during the competition- A&S Officers and solicited help from several kingdoms, but there’s always room for more volunteers. 🙂

We would love to be able to show off one of Our artisans in this way!

Ylva drottning
