Falcon Banner Blocked from the Calonlist

Update emails from The Falcon Banner have been blocked from posting to the Calonlist,  calontir@listserv.unl.edu, by the University that hosts the list. I am currently working on this, but experience tells me that getting it unblocked, if successful, will be a temporary thing and these emails will likely be blacklisted again in the future.

If you have been relying on the Calonlist to receive notices about new articles from The Falcon Banner, we recommend subscribing directly from the website at

http://falconbanner.gladiusinfractus.com/subscribe/

We cannot guarantee that the vagaries of the Internet gods will not cause your email provider to block them at some point in the future, but it will at least avoid this one.

Apologies for the inconvenience, and thank you for your continued support. I remain in Service to Kingdom and Crown,

The Battle of the Bridge — Winner of the Skaldic Challenge at Valor XXXVII

elaisse-de-garrigues

Lady Elaisse de Garrigues

by Lady Elaisse de Garrigues

War was calling. Our enemies were massing far to the east, so our mighty Konung, Duncan Bruce of Logan, mustered our warriors for the long march to that faraway kingdom. Many battles were fought in the great Pennsic War, but this is the tale of one particular battle—a battle for a bridge.

The army of Artemisia had twice our number, nay, tenfold at least, and the only thing holding them back was the churning water of the rain-swollen river. That endless horde, eager to storm across the bridge and slaughter everything in its path, was a chilling sight, but the Calontiri knew no fear. Logan strode to the bridge and hurled a spear toward those shining Artemisian helms with a bellow of “Odin owns you all!”

With a shield-shattering roar, the Calon host charged onto the bridge. The Artemisians could not withstand the Calontiri onslaught. Slowly at first, then with greater speed, the Artemisians fell back as our warriors fought their way across the bridge.

“Arrow!” someone shouted. First one dark missile, then another, arced through the sky then landed harmlessly on upheld Calontiri shields. Logan laughed. “You’ll need more than pointy sticks to send me to Valhalla!” he roared with a deadly swing of his war hammer.

The Artemisians fell back, and back, until the Calon host had nearly reached the far side of the river. “Arrow!” someone called again. This time the sky darkened and the air hissed with dozens of missiles speeding toward the Calontiri. “Shields!” Logan bellowed. Our warriors hunkered beneath as the deadly rain beat against the wood and iron of the Calon shields. That, my friends, is the moment Artemisia charged.

Taken by surprise, the Calontiri fell, one after another joining their dying comrades in the growing river of Calon blood. The survivors retreated, defeat bitter on their tongues. As brave as our warriors are, they might have slunk home in shame, but Logan stood firm. “By Tyr, we will not be beaten!” he shouted. Drawing courage from their Konung’s strength, the Calon host surged forward once again.

As before, the Artemisians staggered under our swords and we forced our way across the bridge. And as before, a flock of fletched missiles darkened the sky. This time we were ready, though. This time, when the Artemisians charged, our warriors met them with deadly steel. This time, the bridge ran slick with Artemisian blood.

And though many Calon warriors found their way to Valhalla, thanks to Logan’s courage, strength and will, no Artemisian crossed that bridge that day.

The songs we know and sing quite well
Have many wondrous tales to tell.

Some are of war and some of woe,
And some of joy and mirth also,

And some of treachery or guile,
Or fugitive in harsh exile.

Yet all may say:  of most beauty
Are songs that teach us of duty.

In Calontir this tale unfolds
A land that models days of old.

Folk of great wisdom live therein
But none so wise as Mathurin.

He lovèd duty more than praise,
Sought after virtue all his days.

To serve the land and common good,
This gentle man did all he could

With vigor and with keenest wit
To mitigate all deficit.

Anon Mathurin Kerbusso
Made for himself a studio,

A smithy of pen and keyboard.
Therein of music made record.

And then, in A.S. forty-three
He travelled to the Jubilee.

From there, in net so fine and fey,
He brought home all he heard that day.

Again of studio made use
And Calon Sound he did produce.

In bailey where the fighters play
With weapons bright against the day

When Crown might call them forth to war,
Mathurin saw a need most sore:

Too few there were, full qualified,
Who Marshal service could provide.

So he resolved to fill the lack
And earn a staff of gold and black.

A hundred miles or more, they say,
He’d travel just to spend one day

Until the fledgling Calon Steel
Was recognized as art genteel.

Again returned to land and hall,
Again he answered kingdom’s call:

To make a venue firm and fast
Wherefrom the news could be broadcast.

The Falcon Banner made suffice
For tidings, tales and good advice.

Perfected it for all to see,
And some who saw were Royalty.

They called him before Calon throne
To make Their pleasure plainly known.

Now Logan Roi and Ylva Reine
Speak thusly unto Mathurin:

Be marked in Our Society
By Pelican in piety,

A cap of red by ermine trimmed,
This manuscript by Aidan limned,

Goutté de sang your arms surround
And by a noble oath be bound.

At summer’s end in Lands That Burn,
The year is A.S. fifty-one.

Now raise a cheer quite heartily!
Let people sing most merrily!

This lai is done, this script also,
Of good Mathurin Kerbusso.

Now benste be all us emang.
And Godde save all in this thrang.

Greetings unto the Populace of the SCA

In July of 2014, the SCA launched its partnership with the Amazon Smile program. This launch was worldwide and through your participation in the program, we have had some very good results.

As of our first anniversary in July 2015, the Amazon Smile program donated $2,234.89 to SCA Inc. As of our second year anniversary in July of 2016, the Amazon Smile program has donated an additional $1,746.47 to SCA Inc.

It is your participation in this partnership that has made it a success. For those of you already participating, we send you a big thank you. We appreciate your continued support of this partnership and SCA Inc.

For those who haven’t heard of the Amazon Smile program, here is the original announcement:

Many of us shop at Amazon for a wide range of products.  Did you know that the SCA can benefit from each purchase you make at no additional charge to you?

Here’s how:  Go to smile.amazon.com.  Sign into your account and a “pop up” page will appear. On the right side of the page, at the bottom is a “search” window.  Type in: Society for Creative Anachronism and click the search button.  Click on the top one and you are done.  Your donations will be automatic for any purchase within the Amazon Smile program (which is most merchandise). You can also use the following link.    http://smile.amazon.com/ch/94-1698556

Amazon donates 0.5% of each purchase to the non-profit organizations of your choice and the Society for Creative Anachronism is one of those organizations.  This is a painless way to support our organization.  These donations will be deposited quarterly from the AmazonSmile Foundation into a separate SCA corporate account dedicated for these donations.

What is the AmazonSmile Foundation?

The AmazonSmile Foundation is a 501(c)(3) private foundation created by Amazon to administer the AmazonSmile program. All donation amounts generated by the AmazonSmile program are remitted to the AmazonSmile Foundation. In turn, the AmazonSmile Foundation donates those amounts to the charitable organizations selected by our customers. Amazon pays all expenses of the AmazonSmile Foundation; they are not deducted from the donation amounts generated by purchases on AmazonSmile.

Board Committee Structure to Replace Grand Council

At its August 22, 2016 meeting the Board of Directors approved the development and implementation of an expanded Board committee structure to encourage and facilitate transparency, participation in and understanding of Society governance throughout the membership of the Society.

The Board shall establish Board committees to serve at the pleasure of the Board. Each of these committees will include representatives of the membership-at-large of the Society, to be nominated by the Kingdoms. A request for nomination process is expected to be in place for the initial committees in the 4th quarter of 2016. Committees to be established include the following:

  • Finance and Audit – Mission: assist the Board’s oversight of the Company’s accounting and financial reporting processes, the audit and integrity of the Company’s financial statements and the qualifications and independence of the Company’s independent auditor
  • Risk Management – Mission: Oversee insurance, legal, and related matters.
  • Nominating and Governance – Mission: recommend to the Board the persons to be nominated for appointment as directors; recommend to the Board the directors to be appointed to each committee of the Board; develop and recommend to the Board Society governance guidelines and policies
  • Communications – Mission: develop and oversee advertising; public relations; publications, social media and other communications initiatives of the Society
  • Membership – Mission: grow and sustain membership in the Society; evaluate and oversee implementation of programs and initiatives for membership support

The Board has also formed the following ad hoc committees to serve until their mission is completed in the discretion of the Board:

  • Youth Activities – Mission: Completion of design and implementation of YAFA programs
  • Technology – Mission: Prepare 5-year technology development plan for Society
  • Peerage – Mission:     Review proposals for the creation of new peerage

From time to time the Board may form other ad hoc committees for special projects.

The Board has the authority to dissolve or modify any committee or its membership at any time.   Committee members serve at the pleasure of the Board, subject to a 3-year term limit. Initial appointments may at the discretion of the Board be for staggered terms so that the term of all such members of a committee do not expire at the same time. Committees will make recommendations to the Board and give quarterly reports. Committee members will be appointed by the Board and Committee chairs designated by the Board.  Committee members at large will be nominated in response to a Request for Nomination (RFN) sent by the Board to each Kingdom Seneschal, describing the mission of the committee and suggested minimum qualifications for committee members.  Kingdoms may then (within a defined period of time) nominate individuals in their Kingdom.  Nominations would be made by the sitting Crown with the advice and consent of the Kingdom Seneschal.
Comments are strongly encouraged and can be sent to:

Pennsic War XLV

By Magdalena vander Meere

20160809_103758The 45th Pennsic War was marked by hotter than usual temperatures, more uneven than usual sides, and the usual amount of fun, punctuated by shopping, learning, fighting, singing and some silliness.

Calontir, led  by Their Most Illustrious Majesties, King Logan and Queen Ylva, allied themselves and our kingdom with the Kingdom of Ealdormere, ruled fairly and firmly by Their Most Feran Majesties, King Nigel and Queen Adrielle. Nigel and Adrielle, in Their wisdom, allied themselves with the formidable Kingdom of The East. For one reason or another, many kingdoms allied with The East, and the sides seemed a bit lopsided. This unevenness resulted in a target-rich environment for the forces of The Middle, and resounding victories for The East.

But we are Calontir, and the victories and defeats of foreign rulers and their petty squabbles mean little to us.

As always, Calontir mustered under the Royal Pavilion. This year, it was brand new and vibrant, having recently been destroyed in the Gulf Wars storm, and remade by the talented, hard-working Mistress Rhianwen.

King Logan and Queen Ylva led the Calon host to the battlefield for battles pitting hundreds against hundreds on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Wednesday was a “day off” in which the battlefield was used for grand tournaments.  Sir Malachi von Uri was the general for the week. His strong leadership and knowledge of tactics was matched only by his good cheer.

On Monday, a battlefield court was held by Their Majesties, and Lady Emma Ness was inducted into the Order of the Iren Huscarl! Her Ladyship was presented with a fine axe and lovely hood by her knight and his lady, Duke Dongal and Qadiya Catalina. Cheers of “Hus! Hus! Hus!” filled the air!

20160809_093036The water bearers, led by Qadiya Catalina, kept the army hydrated with water, Gatorade, pickles, oranges and their usual conviviality. Among the water bearers, Lady Katherine d’Arles, Lady Kolfinna Halvgrimsdottir, Lady Cincinnata, and Lady Cecilia could always be counted on to help a combatant out with a drink and a smile.

Lady Cecilia, His Lordship Pepin and Lord Melchor all attended a textile block printing demo. Lady Cecilia, in particular, came away from the demo with an increased enthusiasm, inspired to block print all the things!

The temperatures were high for Pennsic, getting into the 90s during the day with a heat index of around 100 degrees at certain times. Anyone who has attended Pennsic in the past will recall that this is a bit hot, even for August in that part of the world. However, it did mean we were never shivering in our cots at night.

A20160808_134203nd, as the sun went down, the temperatures did drop to something more tolerable, and Calontiri sought out the fun to be had. Of course, there was singing under the Royal Pavilion every evening. Roving party amoebas wandered around site and into the bog on several occasions. The usual adult parties could be found in the tree-lined areas around the lake, but those stories are not mine to tell.

Thursday was an eventful day in the Calontir encampment. After the battles, as is custom, Sir Malachi chose a fighter to carry the War Banner the next day. He spoke of the valor of a certain Huscarl, and offered the banner to His Lordship Gavin O’Shannon.  As Gavin took the banner, Duke Dongal stood and  begged a boon of Their Majesties and asked that his squire, the very same Gavin, be elevated into the Order of Chivalry!

That evening, as is traditional, King Logan and Queen Ylva held court under the Royal Pavilion. Lady Furia Cincinnata was inducted into The Order of the Torse, and Lady Izza bint Zaqara was inducted into The Order of the Leather Mallet. Riddar Halvgrimr Aðálraðarson came forward to make several announcements, but they were interrupted by his friend, Baron Eikbrandr, who brought a letter to Their Majesties from Mistress Jorunn Eydisardottir. This letter spoke of the skill and knowledge of Riddar Halvgrimr with eloquence. At the end of the letter came the request for a boon! Their Majesties agreed, and Riddar Halvgrimr was inducted into the Order of the Laurel! Many spoke to him, but his own daughter, Lady Kolfinna, spoke with great love, and brought a tear to many eyes.

And, to top off court, Mistress Fionnuala inghean Fhearghuis was granted permission to approach Their Majesties. She came with a request. She knew of a person of high merit; a lady of great knowledge, certain grace and considerable skill. She begged a boon, and it was granted. And, Her Ladyship Sibilla Swain was invited into the Order of the Laurel.

After court, industrious Calontiri set to preparing for our traditional party. The OAFS planned a great game, and Her Ladyship Sibilla made ready a sumptuous buffet of party food.

The OAFS,  Mistress Rhianwen, Master Kirk and others, created Huscarl Hockey.20160811_120736 Played with rattan axes and a ball of dubious construct (was there really an apple in the middle of that duct tape?), the field included “the lower 48 states, but not including private encampments.” Three players on each side used the flat sides of the axes to whack the ball along the ground between goal posts. There was also a penalty box. His Lordship Pepin spent a good bit of time in the box, but he insists he was unfairly judged to be body checking. When she arrived Queen Adrielle eagerly took part in the sport, while King Nigel chose to remain an ardent fan.

Her Ladyship Sibilla, duly gobsmacked by the boon begged so recently, pulled herself together and led her team of cooks. Lady Cecilia, Mistress Fionuala, and Countess Gwen  formed the team. Lord Melchor and His Lordship Pepin provided needed assistance in moving tables. Meatballs, roasted chicken, many delicious cheeses, berries in cream, and many, many delights filled the table. Her Ladyship Emma arranged for adult beverages to be served as well as sekanjabin. No one went away hungry or thirsty.

The renowned music ensemble, Wolgemut, came into camp during our party and delighted the crowd with many songs! They stayed for a bit after playing to partake of the food and drink and catch up with old friends. Wolgemut has a long history of being a friend to Calontir, and was recently made an Iren Feran! The leader of Wolgemut, Misha, proudly showed off his medallion!

20160811_205827And the singing and game playing went on into the night.20160807_102454

Friday, our last full day at Pennsic, was warm and full of fighting, last-minute shopping and merriment. Not a kingdom for complacency, Calontir squeezed every last bit of fun out of Pennsic. Partying under the Royal Pavilion lasted into the wee hours, as one-by-one war-goers drifted off to their tents in exhaustion, knowing that the morning light meant packing and going home. But, oh, it was worth it.
