The Coronation of Duncan Bruce of Logan and Ylva Jonsdottir

Here do I swear a lawful oath on the sword.
I will protect, defend, and serve the CalonLaw, Konungatal, and Konungriki.
Ivow to the witan, the brytia, and the folk to maintain the World as we know it.
I shall rule according to the law, bring wordfame to the realm,
And give golden rings and shining steel to those who earn each.
As long as fire burns; earth grows; child calls to mother, and mother bears children;
As long as folk kindle fire; ships sail; shields glint; snow lies; and the sun shines;
As long as the wind blows; and waters fall to the sea;
And as long as the Falcon flies the long spring day, with a fair wind behind him on wings outspread.
So swear We, Duncan Bruce of Logan/Ylva Jonsdottir

With these words Duncan Bruce of Logan and Ylva Jonsdottir ascended to the thrones of Calontir, the 66th Konung and Drottning in that lineage.

Previously, in the closing Court of Their Majesties Matsunaga and Elena, both Their Majesties spoke to Their populace with full hearts and tender words as they stepped down from the thrones. Great was the acclaim They received from Their people.

After the Coronation Court, the populace adjourned to the Commons for the noon meal. The inn was a fundraiser for a college fund for the children of Duke Ostwald, Dani and Keldon. At evening Court it was announced that they had $850 to donate to that fund. Another fundraiser, for a young baby in the barony who requires special formula, gathered another $800.

It was a beautiful day, though quite warm, and the Armored fighting, Cut & Thrust fighting, as well as archery, were well attended. A&S activities centered around largesse items for the new Crowns, and the displays were impressive in both number and quality.

At evening Court four boons were begged; Lucian for the Laurel; Agamemnon for the Chivalry; Svana and Gunnar for the Pelican. Mistress Dorcas’ complete court report will be published elsewhere in The Falcon Banner.

And, on a lighter note, Their Royal Majesties’ Whims are as follows:

  • His Majesty does not fight “Heavy” (he is sensitive about his weight). He does not know who “Rattan” is and does not believe he has faced them in combat. He fights both Armored and Cut & Thrust combat.
  • Four digits, late Period.
  • Their Majesties would not have feasts wait upon Them.  Rather, They would prefer Their populace to be fed when the food is hot and ready. They will join Their people at table as soon as They can.
  • Speaking of feast, They prefer an arrangement of head table that maximizes conversation (round table or u-shaped arrangement).
  • His Majesty threatened a “Holy Grail Quote Tax”, but realized He would pay more than He would receive.
  • Complaining to His Majesty about not finding something on Facebook is NOT a good use of your time.

Calontir at 50th Year

By Duchess Magdalena vander Meere

From June 17 to June 27, 2016, people from across the Known World gathered to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of our Society.  The location was Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds and Conference Complex in Danville, Indiana.

The Society for Creative Anachronism got its start on May 1, 1966 in the backyard of Diana Paxson, known in the SCA as Mistress Diana Listmaker.  Paxson, and several other “founders” were attendance, and held founders meet-ups, giving anyone interested a chance to talk to the people who started it all.

A History Hall was located in a blissfully air-conditioned building. Each kingdom was invited to put together a display of historical artifacts, information graphics and a video to help convey their kingdom’s rich history. Calontir’s display included a historic set of crowns (often called the Fleury Crowns), the warlord and consort circlets, a kingdom banner, a poster depicting the lineage of our kingdom, and several posters explaining our award structure. A video slideshow was put together of photos from the archives of Mistress Rhiannyth, who has been photographing Calontir since our days as a principality.

A memorial wall, in the hallway leading to the history hall, bore the images and heraldry of many people who have been lost to us over the years.  By the end of the week, Calontir had sadly added one more name and face to the wall.

But 50 years is only a start! Our celebration was not just about the past, but about the present and the future.  Many other activities graced this event; archery, light and heavy combat, arts and sciences demonstrations and classes, equestrian activities, a bardic stage, dancing, and shopping.

And Calontiri could be found participating in all areas.

The Great Machine

The Great Machine

Several live demos were set up along Artisans Square, which was centrally located. A Blacksmith shop, and outdoor period cooking lab, an iron furnace, and a joiners shop garnered much attention. Calontir’s own Great Machine, commanded by our own Master Gerald Goodwine might easily have been the most popular demo on site.

The archery range provided opportunities for a variety of shoots. With the range schedule listed as “open” most days, archers did not know what to expect when they arrived to shoot! But plenty of shoots took place throughout the week.

The light weapons arena hosted two or three tournaments each day. Most were heavy rapier but several were for cut and thrust. On any given day 50 to 75 fighters could be seen in armor. Thursday was Master Alan of Darkdale’s 60th birthday. He was looking to fight 60 different people. “By the time I got to 40 my brain told me it was time to be done.” He fought several passes with each fighter so the fight total was somewhere around 200 passes with people from 16 different Kingdoms.

Lady Vashti said that after attending a Persian dance class, she was excited to give this challenging style another try. She enjoyed spending time in the Middle Eastern culture tent.

20160623_213113Heavy (or rattan) combat was held in both a covered building with a concrete floor and also in an outdoor arena. Each day, at least three tournaments or grand melees were scheduled. On Thursday, Herzog Hirsch won the Great Sword Tournament, which was in a round-robin style.  He also participated in a tournament to support St. Jude charity.

A covered stage stood along the main promenade of the event.  Plenty of open stage time allowed performers to step right up and entertain the crowd.  At other times, specific entertainers were scheduled to delight the audience. A highlight of the week was when The Three Rivers Players took turns performing with Duke Cariadoc of the Bow! Mistress Elien, of Calontir, was so excited to meet Cariadoc that she asked if he’d be in a selfie with her, and he complied, smiling.  Master Ravasz updated his iconic Newby and The Shower to include the unique characteristics of the 50-Year shower trucks.

Magda and Catrijn

20160623_130831The equestrians of the Known World came out in force. Baroness Eowyth said that the number of horses in attendance more than doubled the largest number up to that point, with more than 120 horses on site. Events included games, foam and wood jousting, mounted combat, a choreographed carousel, and mounted archery, and chariot archery. The huge, covered horse arena was active from early morning to well past dark every day. Our own Duke Eringlin and Sir Saito both made it to the finals in the wood jousting tournament. And Her Ladyship Catrijn won the novice games tournament on our own Ippo Proti, Kacey!

Those Calontiri who made the trek to the SCA 5oth Anniversary Celebration seemed to enjoy themselves mightily, in the way that Calontir usually celebrates; singing. On Friday, Calontir took to the stage, accompanied by Queen Adrielle of Ealdormere, and sang in honor of Herzog Ostwald. Ending with Warrior’s Wyrd, Calontir did what we do best. We were family.

Unto the grieving populace of Calontir do Their Royal Highnesses Logan & Ylva bid solace

In this time of Our collective grief, We want everyone to know that We appreciate that many of you may feel conflicted about attending both Our Coronation and the services for His Grace Ostwald, and that We understand if anyone feels they cannot attend Us. Please do that which will give you the fewest regrets.

We have spoken with the event steward for Our Coronation, Her Excellency Nicolete de St Denis, and there will be a time and place for all of Us to remember and appreciate His Grace. Any thoughts you may care to record, or tokens you wish to give will be transported to Her Grace Kay of Gordon to honor her husband.

If We have spoken to you about participating in Coronation, and you now feel that you cannot attend, please let Us know at your earliest convenience.

We want everyone to celebrate His Grace in the manner they feel is most fitting. This is Calontir, and family comes first.

The Passing of His Grace Duke Ostwald Konrad von Riesetoten

Duke Ostwald Konrad von Riesetoten

Duke Ostwald Konrad von Riesetoten

His Grace Duke Ostwald Konrad von Riesetoten passed away on the evening of June 24th, 2016 after suffering a massive heart attack two days previously.  He was 48 years old.

Duke Ostwald is survived by his lady wife Duchess Kaye of Gordon, daughter Dani of Oakheart and son Keldon of Oakheart.

Twice King of Calontir, Thegn and current seneschal of the Shire of Oakheart , Ostwald touched many lives. A respected and valiant knight, he also was instrumental in the growth of both Youth Combat and Calontir Steel. There has been an outpouring on the Kingdom Facebook page of stories and remembrance of his kindness, his teaching, his honor and his chivalry. But most especially, his love for his wife and children, and for this community we all share. For those not on Facebook, Mistress Sofya la Rus has collected many of these remembrances on Ostwald’s Calontir Wikispace page:

http://calontiri.wikispaces.com/Ostwald+Konrad+von+Riesetoten

On a personal note, Ostwald was my brother in service, having received our Cross of Calontir on the same day, and brother in arms on the stile field. I will miss his presence.

A celebration of life will be held Sunday, July 10th at 2:00 pm at Forsyth United Methodist Church, 14399 US-160, Forsyth, MO 65653.

Skald of Their Majesties’ Court Competition at Valor/Bardic Bedlam

From the Dean of the Bardic College:

“What is a Norse court without a skald?” asked Prinz Logan and Prinzessa Ylva.

At the Valor/Bardic Bedlam event, eight weeks after Their ascension to the thrones, the royal couple will hold a skald competition.

They request a story/poem/song/other depicting the glory of a particular person, group, or the Calontir army in general at Lilies War or Pennsic… or some other event that occurred between Crown Tourney and Valor (inclusive). A Norse style is mandatory.

Some “documentation” is a plus, either written or spoken, explaining the historical basis for the piece, but it needn’t be in great depth.

Truth is optional. Exaggeration is expected.

The winner shall be named Skald of Their Majesties’ court, will likely be asked to perform the piece several times during Their reign, and might be asked to sit with Them in court a time or two, on a cushion or stool.

Duke Ostwald Konrad von Riesetoten in the Hospital

From Ostwald’s sister:

“Yesterday was my brother’s 48th birthday. While weed waiting at work around lunchtime he had a massive heart attack. After roughly 40 minutes of CPR & such he arrived at Cox South Trauma unit. His body temp was extremely elevated & there was swelling and damage to the brain. They spent hours cooling him to reduce the swelling & getting him stable. They will keep him cool until this evening, then slowly warm for 8-12 hrs.
Tomorrow morning they will be able to do more scans & give us some solid answers.
We just hate the waiting …”

From Their Royal Highnesses Logan and Ylva

At Grand Court at Lilies War XXX, Their Royal Highnesses Logan and Ylva announced who the Calontir forces would be fighting with at this year’s Pennsic War. While it is traditional that Calontir fights with the Midrealm, it is not uncommon that they align with the East upon occasion. However, this year Calontir does not choose either side. Instead, Calontir will fight beside Their Royal Iren Ferean Majesties of Ealdormere Nigel and Adrielle. Where Ealdomere goes, so goes Calontir.

Long Live Ealdomere!
