Letter from the Field

11 October, Anno Societatus LIIII

Being 2019 of the Common Era

Dearest friend Bindi,

I realize it has been overlong since I set ink on parchment to bring you tidings of our fair Calontir. Methinks other missives reach you on occasion, another mayhaps will find welcoming eyes.

On this day I am adding the final packages on my wagon for a journey to the Lake of Smith. Our good King and Queen, being childless, are searching for an Heir.

They have summoned all Their greatest warriors of Calontir to fight in a grand Tournament! The winner and consort shall become the Heirs and crowned Prince and Princess by right of arms.

Lord Øyríkr, a mighty fighter, thought of me, and requested me to be his consort in the tournament!

I must say the honor is too great!

For when he bests the other great lords and ladies, I shall be Queen of Calontir. I faint at the thought.

His lady wife, and my lord husband,  have given their blessings, for they have no desire for the pomp and pagentry and responsibilities of the crown. Therefore, when he considered me, the way was clear for me to agree.

The northern winds blow, bringing such a chill to my very bones. Soon the snows will fill our lands, and we must needs prepare. How lucky are we to have such fine companions who endlessly prepare our estates for leaner times.

My servants and I have stitched new garb for Lord Øyríkr and myself. He bought a lovely linen and trim, though methinks with winter nigh upon us, verily, other garb of fine wool will soon be completed as well.

The wagon is nearly ready, I consider the chill journey south and our countryfolk in their tents during the time of the Tournament. Methinks there shall be more than fires for cooking burning throughout the nights.

Alas, word comes that the courier has entered my estate. I must needs seal this missive and deliver it unto his hands ere he departs. I know not when the next courier passes. Hold us in your prayers that the new Heirs are good and kind and will do right in these lands.

Though you now live in the northernmost reaches of the Kingdom of the West, your friends here hold you dearly in their hearts. Your lovely countenance is sorely missed.

As ever, your friend,

Nesscia

Pennsic Family Activities Seeking Volunteers

Greetings from the Pennsic 49 Family Activities Coordinator!

I know that it feels like Pennsic just happened, but next years’ staff is already hard at work preparing for Pennsic 49.
Family Activities cannot run without the help of many hands, and we are looking for volunteers for several of our coordinator positions, as well as folks who think they might like to shadow those jobs to possibly do it in a few years. We’d love to prevent burnout by having many folks trained on jobs.

Please fill out the linked form or email me at fpoint@pennsicwar.org if you are interested in any or more than one of these jobs. For jobs requiring an SCA background check, there is plenty of time to get one, and I’ll be happy to walk you through the process.

Thanks!

Mistress Leonete D’Angely, Family Point Coordinator

In Memoriam: The Passing of Aine nic Taillieur

The words of Mistress Kristine nic Taillieur:

Courtesy of the Knowne World Memorial Shield Project

On September 3, 2019, Annette Barker (nee Taylor,) known to many as Aine nic Taillieur, passed from this world to the next. Lest any question her might, let all know of her story. Though unusual, a clan of Draugr arose in her homeland which called themselves Cancer. A strong warrior woman, she fought bravely for two years, wounding and destroying members of the clan through guile, knife, and even resorting to a poison which pained her deeply and caused the loss of her locks.

After battling fiercely, however, it soon became apparent to Aine that the war could not be won without great cost. Knowing that, without a home base, the enemy could be stopped, she planned one final tactic. She pulled the Draugr into a false sense of security, allowing them to believe they had won and drawing them into a tight circle around herself. At the last moment, she set the land about her ablaze, trapping the Draugr within. Alas, she too, was trapped.

Thus passed Aine Nic Taillier from this world, her battle cry screamed across the land and the sounds of Savage Daughter ringing in her ears.

Such was her love for those around her, to protect them from the enemy. Such was she a mother, who nurtured all who met her. Such was she loved that, upon hearing of her passing, cups were raised across the meadhall to toast to her victory and to the memory of such a great woman.

Skol, for the hero Aine nic Taillieur, who chose to fight until the end, taking the enemy with her
