Introduction to The Calontiri Wikispace

Ed. Note:  The Falcon Banner is promoting the Calontiri Wikispace managed by Mistress Sofya as another tool in informing and connecting Calontiri. The Falcon Banner has begun linking the names that appear in our articles to the person’s Wikispace page when it is available, and to their Order of Precedence page when it is not.  Remember that wiki sites depend on users to create and maintain the content, so please consider setting up your own Calontiri Wikispace page and keeping it up to date. Thank you.

 

What can we do with the Calontiri Wikispace?

 

  • Help to get to know our fellow Calontiri better – interests, skills, personas, put faces to names
  • Make it easier to submit well-informed award recommendations
  • Let our various guilds and interest groups make their own place on the web
  • Give Calontiri merchants another venue to spread their craft
  • Be a place to find the stories and songs explain what it is to be Calontiri
  • Work on joint projects and plans
  • Whatever else we can think of.


Anyone can edit existing pages although only “members” can add new pages or upload files.

As an unofficial page, we will not need releases (Model, Photo, Content) – hopefully. But be honorable and get permission before you add someone else’s creative works.

  • Join the wikispace (give administrators a little time to approve it), and sign in.
  • Click the + sign next to “Pages and Files” on the upper left hand side menu.
  • Name your page
  • Select the appropriate template.
  • Fill in the information.

  • Click on the “Edit” button in the upper right.
  • Change text much as you would with a standard word processor.
  • Standard “quick keys” work

To add an image:

  • Copy and paste an image from another website,  

OR

  • Copy the link to an “External Image” from another webpage

OR

  • Log in as a member of the wikispace.
  • Upload the image to the wiki then
  • Place it on the page (members only)
  • Click the “Insert Images and Files” button on the edit bar (the little picture between the links and the widget/TV button)  Insert images button  and follow the directions there.    
  • Images will tend to look best if you align them to the right.

A note about Tags:

  • “Tags” are how the wiki organizes pages, using the “List of Pages” widget.
  • If you add the tag “people” to your page, then your page will automatically be listed on the People page with everyone else.
  • If you add the tag “herald” to your page, then you will be listed with everyone else who is tagged.
  • Tags

    You don’t need to be in full “Edit” mode (or signed in) to change tags.

    • In upper right corner, click on the “…” button for more options
    • Select “Tags”, then select “edit”
    • Type the first 3-4 letters of the tag name
    • Wait a moment for the wiki to bring up the tags that have already used those letters
    • Select the appropriate one
    • If you don’t see the one you want, try a different potential tag – “Clothing” instead of “Costuming”
    • Capitalization doesn’t seem to matter
    • Tags should probably be more generic rather than more specific – so tag “music” rather than “vocal music”, “weaving” rather than “cardweaving”, etc.
    • A&S tags are based on the official categories in the Kingdom Judging Criteria, slightly simplified, eg. Dance instead of “Dance Performance, European”
    • Award/Order tags are based the official name of the Order, eg. “Silver Hammer”
    • Group tags are just the name of the group, eg. “Vatavia” NOT “Barony of Vatavia”.

Chiara’s persona is of a 15th-century Florentine, hence I looked to Lorenzo di Medici for inspiration. He was not only the ruler of Florence from 1469 to 1492, he was also a patron of the arts and a poet himself. I wrote the text in ottava rima style, which originated in Italy and was used for heroic poems. It uses iambic pentameter and ABABABCC rhyming scheme. Medici used this style in some of his works, and I also used some of his other poetry as inspiration for some of the word choices.

I also included notes in parentheses when appropriate to explain certain word choices.

The falcon soars across the shining sky
with swiftest wings to claim a northern breeze
Zephyr that lifts him is the softest sigh
as he circles over towers and trees
and to the wind he sends a searing cry
when thus with eyes aware a prize he sees
below him is a sweet daughter of peace
(di Paxiti means daughter of peace)
performing deeds that seem to never cease

Oft she appears when giants make their wars
(she is a fan of the New York Giants)
as fierce as brinded cats with flashing swords
(also a fan of the K-State Wildcats, and Shakespeare uses “brinded cats” in Macbeth as a reference to wild cats)
for golden crowns the reddest blood they pour
their greatest joys and deeds she right records
(this is intended to cover both her job as listmistress and scroll text writing)
then she to those with deepest wounds succors
with water sweet relieving wounded hordes.
When she completes such deeds, what spies his eye?
why tis but sweetest purple butterfly
(her device includes a purple butterfly)

The falcon’s eyes not only ones that see
for Logan king and Ylva queen are wise
so Chiara di Paxiti must be
for deeds so collected clearly comprise
a Cross of Calontir now must decree
and title given not her only prize
from Pontmerci bestowed ten saccato
and her sworn lady’s love now all shall know
(Issabell wanted to make sure that Chiara got land from Pontmerci, a saccato is a Tuscan unit of area that is about 1.389 acres.)

Came her of whom we now do sing

Who here before the thrones does stand

Who left many a foreign land

Barb’d shaft that leaves the flaxen string

That soars away from twisted strand

Like fox it seems, a living thing,

Yet crafted by an artist’s hand

And so a spirit may remand

Itself to home it now finds dear

Heed now the words of Queen and King

They add to Boga Huscarl band

One hundred arrows in a ring

The knife that flies from gentle hand

The axe that flies at her command

They see all this, They see it clear

See how her heart turned Calontir

Notable are those who pick up the weapons of war to defend our homeland. Memorable are those who practice the crafts which sustain us. Yet rarest of all are those who also labor mightily out of view so that the word-fame of others may be more easily found, while seeking no glory for themselves.
We, Logan Sword-King and Ylva Arts-Queen, Rulers of Calontir, call notice to our drengr known as Gunnar Thorisson who bears a shield quartered of green and silver edged with a band of black, upon which are four caltrops pointed in a cross and counterchanged in color. Know that We are well pleased with his service and do advance his station, rank and title thus creating him a Peer of Our Realm and a member of the noble Order of the Pelican.
Furthermore, in gratitude for his many services, We free him from taxes for a period of seven years and gift unto him twelve mares and two stallions for his use on his garth-steading near the town of Stavanger.  In testimony we have made these Our Letters Patent and set Our hands and Seal this 4th day of September, Anno Societatis 51, being the year of the modern era 2016.

Logan Konung and Ylva Drotting see long and devoted service from Lothar de Rot. He is made a Baron of Their Court so all remember his dedication to Calontir. Konung and Drottning order this written and a coronet of silver given to honor Baron Lothar in Cum an Iolair this 8 day of Heyannir, in Náttleysi in the XXXIV year of Calontir.

The Falcon Banner Scroll Archive Project

The Falcon Banner is beginning a new project, the Scroll Archive Project.

Headed up by Mistress Dorcas Whitecap and Mistress Aidan Cocrinn, the goal is to preserve and display the texts and images of scrolls given out to the Calontir people. We will concentrate on GoA and PoA scrolls for now, but may expand to examples of Royal pre-prints for other awards at a later time. A new item, Scroll Archive, will now appear at the top of the page where the Archive can be found.

Scribes’ labors make our experience of the SCA richer and more beautiful, but often their work is only seen ephemerally and then whisked away to the recipients’ home, never to be seen by most Calontiri again. The Scroll Archive Project is intended to make the beauty of these works more accessible that they may be appreciated more widely.

If you personally have a scroll that you would like to see preserved, and you know the text author, calligrapher and illuminator so that we can obtain their permission to publish, please contact Dorcas, Aidan or myself to arrange publication.
